Even with plates on it, I’m still just waiting to for them flashing red & blue lights on account of the no seatbelt situation. Watch this space...

Stance is actually alright! I want the rear lower, but I’m not offended by the current rake at all. Oh and the diff doesn’t seem to be making any noise. Under load, cruising or on the overrun it’s all quiet. I think I got lucky there! Thanks again for your generous donation.

I’ll come visit as a part of the motor run-in, gotta iron out a few bugs first. Image

No worries Joe, make sure you bring that unwanted chev engine with you that will lower the rear Ha Ha Ha !

The evening of the day I got Leroy through registration, I timed a quick photoshoot on the rooftop of a car park at my work, to golden-hour perfection

Had a blast fanging around the Inner West with Leroy’s previous custodian, Jodie too, then set about the task of slowly ironing out a few little bugs.

Wiper motor came apart to clean oxidation on the armature and brushes, as well as a good soak of the supporting bushes to get it spinning a little quicker.

Image

Through some wheeling and dealing, I also managed to get my hands on a refurbished Stromberg carb for the right price, in the name of chasing the hesitation at lower engine speed and slightly erratic behaviour under load that I’d diagnosed earlier.
It arrived with a 047 main jet, which I swapped out for 051 then got to tinkering. After trying 053 and even an 055 jet from a 161 carb (out of curiosity - it ran terribly), I settled on 53.

As there are a few unknowns (slightly warm ‘towing’ cam grind, the ex Falcon HEI distributor with advance curve reportedly suited to wilder cam specs and cheapie 4-1 exhaust extractors), getting a good tune established was always going to take some doing.

The one thing I soon realised that the larger distributor cap meant I ran out of static advance when the dizzy cap clip hit the engine side cover before the motor reached ‘over advance’. With a slight hesitation still evident and no pinging heard, I moved the leads clockwise one step around the cap and established a new position for No. 1 cylinder, allowing more advance. Although the vacuum advance pod is now quite close to the column shift linkages, they never foul.

Image

Oh and I also reset all the valve clearances hot which quietened things down a lot

Image

Finally, I’ve got the Grey singing and it pulls away from idle in any gear without complaint! Idles slow and smooth and the thing even starts pretty well when hot.

After also chasing away a gearbox leak (the drain plug needed nipping up!), we hit the road to bed the motor in on Saturday, visiting Greg up in NW Sydney who was in the middle of painting his V8 EK sedan

Image

as well as Rob (ardiesse) who took the controls for a spin, before getting the tools out to help fix my ill-adjusted top steering column bearing and previously non-cancelling indicators too

Image

With about 180 miles under its belt now, the motor is freeing up and the whole car is behaving really well. I’ve got a bit more tweaking of the wheel alignment to do but it’s very driveable.

Tonight I added a USB port to so i can charge my iPhone which also plugs into an Aux cable for the retro head unit.

Image

Next up: time to find a set of venetians! And maybe even paint up the sun visor I have set aside... summer is as unforgiving as ever it seems! Otherwise I’m loving this car Image

Cheers, Joe

Looking great Joe - I cant wait to just be doing tinkering stuff in and around driving - Ive got one of those US retro radio devices and plan on dropping the lead down through the glove box card so the phone can sit on the storage tray underneath but the usb mod is good idea

You’ve done a great job for a budget rebuild joe. The tyres fill the guards nicely for what looks like a practical combination of drivability and appearance. The paint looks damn good, especially considering your back yard methodology. Great photo shoot. Leroy looks all business. I will be very happy if I can get anywhere near the result you’ve achieved mate.
Cheers

Yeah! Making everything work well is the most rewarding part for me. I rushed it back to the road with the dodgiest body work known to man, so I could find out if I actually enjoyed driving it.
Now I’m regretting that approach cos I DO enjoy driving it hahaha... and of course, now I can’t stand looking at the rotten paint and panel!

I reckon a year from now, I’ll be lining up some third party help to get the flanks looking a little neater and having another go at the paint. Nothing as flashy as yours, but definitely better than my attempt.

Nice idea on the under dash phone location. I am now mocking up a bracket to put my phone above the ashtray, without drilling holes of course... we’ll see what my problem solving mind comes up with.
Cheers J

Gotta feed that smart phone addiction Harv!

To be completely honest I got sick of ads and the lack of variety on Sydney radio stations after about an hour on the road, I’ll play my own tunes thanks Image

Thanks Clay.
Those photos are carefully chosen and the light was very forgiving believe me! But I do love builder’s photos, I got that quirk from my dad and grandad, steam train historian and locomotive fireman respectively. Beyer & Peacock circa 1910, eat your heart out.

I’m totally sold on the original 13 rims and these tyres too, so much so that I’m gonna now polish up a set of hubcaps. Saw a blue HR yesterday with black rims, hub caps and white bands and realised I actually need to ditch my trademark NYC cop car look (it looked unreal on my old brown Centura) and go all the way back to stock.

Can’t wait to see your Ute come together, I’m loving the progress. Tips from me: fit sedan rear springs... and get your paint and panel sorted first go!! Don’t do the dodge like I did haha

Cheers J

How’s yours coming along?

I used to love me some RN also, that’s a good call. About time I reacquainted.

To be fair, the muffler in my 2” system is blown out and droney as hell so I’d probably be wiser to spend some $ replacing that before I get annoyed at what’s on the wireless!

He sure does mate.
The photos in the sun are just great.

Love the twin USB’s such a good idea.

Is your dash / interior colour Wedgwood Blue?

I bet he’s a blast to cruise in.
It just makes you smile.
I’ve been out in my FB a lot recently even taking it to work most days,
and workmates say they have never seen me so happy LOL
