I am sick of driving my modern turbo rocket, and it is time to get back into the old beast.

Hope to try and get some oil pressure this Thursday after I hand in my extended research paper on flood insurance.

How much vasoline should I use when packing the pump? I am going to try Blacky's method, but if that doesn't work I will need to pack it.

Yeah RB, haven't had a chance to play with it.

I have been too busy to do much other than my uni work. Ah well, only a few months to go!

I think my mum is looking forward to me finishing as well - then I won't have an excuse for not having time to fix the retic!


Cheers Blacky - I will give the air pressure method a go. How do you seal the rocker? Just put your hand around the breather hole where the air duster enters?

Yep , whack a rag around it , pressurise and turn it over with the coil lead off until oil pressure comes up.

Do you have to pull the plugs?

No , it doesnt take long , just a few seconds and you should have pressure , do you have a decent gauge you can fit for testing ?

Have a mooneyes oil pressure gauge.

Do you need to bleed the line to the gauge of air before it wil read correctly?

It will sort itself out , you should see the oil flow up the tube once it has pressure up.

Got the oil pressure up by packing the oil pump with grease.

Started her up, and had it running for a while.

All is not well

There is a ticking noise (loud) coming from the engine. It was there for a little while, then went away, now is back.

This tick goes away about around 2000rpm

Also, the engine boils within about 30 secs of running

I fear that the head could be leaking exhaust gas straight into the water galleries, thus causing the radiator to bubble up so fast. I don't think this is air lock as I had the rad cap off and after about 30 secs of running, I noticed water shooting out of the rad. My engine bay is now covered in white water droplet spots from the dried coolant. It is everywhere

However, I did have it running long enough to take it up the street and back

Not sure where to go from here, I think I will need to have it examined by the engine builder as I think it is out of my league.

The aftermath:

Wow,
A few dramas, the ticking noise could be a dry lifter or rocker arm not adjusted right.
The water spewing out like that indicates head gasket or worse still cracked something. Don't tell your engine builder you ran it with no oil pressure although he will know when it is teared down, only takes a few minutes or even seconds and thats it for the bearings, worst case scenario of course.
Hope its not though.

dont use coolant with new head gaskets, wait a few hundred ks before adding it.ur engine builder should have told you that.
