Front is looking cleaner. I’m waiting on the repair section. I can wash and start painting. I am using Phoenix paints metal fix which gledge put me on to. Thanks Glen. Water based and 3000 degree heat proof. Paint on light surface rust or apparently you get the free phosphate appearing as a powder. Using this for floor inside and out including the firewall.

Random shot above was just showing mate Alec how to post using Tapatalk.

Painted the front clip with 1.5 coats of Metal Fix.
Still a few repairs to do. Got half way through this one when a mate turned up.
Bought a sand blasting gun to do some of the bigger bits that won’t fit in my supacheap cabinet and had a go. I think the trick will be to use citric acid first where possible. Mate Alec is using electrolysis with soda ash solution, clean reo bars as cathodes and 12 volt battery charger as power supply. The advantage I can see over citric is that rust inside box sections that can’t be seen or pressure washed is stripped using this method.

Took my seat to the trimmers,together with the head lining and side bits.

Repair section has turned up at work but I’m on a couple of days off. Also need to get more Metal Fix. The litre I got initially was enough to coat the front clip once with some left over. The stuff is easy and effective to work with. It looks to be very durable. Not show finish but hey it’ll do me.

Shaun Warren at Willunga Hill Stephen. He was recommended by several local friends. He works out of his shed and did his apprenticeship on Holden bench seats. He is looking in to textures and colours to try and match original, which is horizontal grain in blue. Trim code 529-833. So it will be original as possible.

I’ve asked him to do the head lining and side trims as well. He doesn’t know about the random star pattern, but close as possible again.

I tried to find the random star pattern for head lining also but had no luck - even from the states - Steve from classic Auto-trimmers in Ringwood Melb managed to find a roll of star pattern in the same colour as the original but not a random pattern and made a pattern from my original ute lining - so basically same as rares material but in the same silver grey not white - might be an option if you can't find what your looking for.

Guess I’ll be satisfied with the non random star pattern.

My recollection is that my HK wagon had this same pattern. Staring at it after a few too many magic mushrooms back in the day. Lying in the back for as long as I could handle, being too freaked out to talk to anyone. Maybe I’m better off with something less rAndom, lest I have a flashback.

Another little job. Retapping the bolts I snapped off in the subframe. They wouldn’t come out with an easy out and I’ve learnt not to try too hard with those.
I used a 19/64 bit to drill out prior to tapping the 5/8 UNC threads for the sway bar mount. Any fitters out there know of this is correct?

Next job. May have to take the crossmember off, gasp....

I’m not a fitter Clay, but you’ve taken me back to my apprenticeship days for two reasons. I’ve never seen Trefolex in a spray can, but I nabbed this can of gel when I finished my time about 32 years ago



I’ve used it heaps and it’s still about 3/4 full

Another thing I had in my apprentice toolbox was this little gem, which I refer to very often



I assume you meant 3/8” rather than 5/8”UNC, and according to the bible



the tapping drill is 8.00mm, with 5/16” as a secondary choice. Your 19/64” drill is a smidge smaller which is fine, especially as the hole was already threaded and you’d just be removing the bolt thread chips. I normally do as you did but probably go a size or two smaller again with the drill bit so as not to damage the female thread (it can be hard to get exact centre on the bolt), then dig out the bolt leftovers with a bent scribe or similar.

I couldn’t get the gel John but the guy at local hardware, ex fitter told the same story as you and sold me the spray. I meant 5/16 rather than 5/8. Maybe I used 9/32 bit. Anyway it worked. I’ve just got rust envy now.
