A question please.

Leave the hoist empty, and raise it up just enough to clear the ute.
Park the ute under the hoist.
Place a beam (timber for testing, steel later if it works) across the hoist ramps.
Place a sling around the beam.

Is there enough lift left in the hoist to use the hoist as an engine crane? Is the 240V motor gentle enough to lift an engine, or does it take off like a rocket?

The beam might have to be raised up a bit (some timber cribbing, about milkcrate sized). A block and tackle or even just a load leveler would be handy instead of the sling too.

Cheers,
Harv

I’ll be able to try this when I get back from niece’s wedding in Sydney in a bit over a week Harv. In the meantime you can see from this photo about how much additional lift you would get.Image
It is only about 180mm. There is a higher lift version though, which gives you an extra 400mm, for an extra $300.

Thankyou.

I wonder if putting a beam across two of the pads on a 2-post hoist (and using that as an engine crane) would cross the redneck line…

Cheers,
Harv

For a bit of extra height and control you could put a floor jack on top of the beam and double down on rednecking it.
