Record the conversation!!
And then get a signed statement.

Whoever this engineer is, I am looking forward to seeing his approval and this wagon getting full rego.
Some of you reading this must think me a skeptic, but a lifetime of building modified cars and manufacturing conversion components for others to use has made me this way. When it comes to getting full approval and engineering cretification on modified cars of all types I have a very open mind.
I am going to sit back and watch from now on, Asked my questions and have had my say.

Just to throw in another curve ball;
I have a mate that 2 years ago was told that stuffin a LS1 and six speed manual in an LJ was A OK. He's been poking along just about to fit up the box and mini tubs when out of the blue the engineer rings him and tell him he's get two months to have it finished!
He's got about 15g to spend and a lotta time carting it down to Melb for chassis test ect ect so he had to pull the pin. :( very deflateted to say the least. Chopped up a nice LJ and VX. A lot of wasted time
Just shows, get things in writing.

Talked to him last night and he reckons hes gunna go the LS1 in a HQ andthe LJ can go into storage. And wont be using that engineer again!!

I'll probably get shot for saying this (and I'm not referring to Doller's mate or anyone in particular), but with builds that are right on the cliff's edge when it comes to interpreting the rules, i think there should be a time limit given on the build , and as Doller said get things in writing.

i understand people don't have the money, time, talent, or what ever to do a build in a few months, but if I were an engineer and I gave the go ahead on a job, then the guy comes to me in 5 or 6 years (still with an unfinished car) and jumps up and down about the rules being changed, what are you supposed to do ?? . Maybe when they decide to change the rules they could give a 6 month grace or something to let the car get finished.

I know a few guys that got caught out in the early 90's when they changed the rules about what engine can go in what car (before that it was a free for all). Some had to scrap projects that cost as much as what a house was worth back then, or spend even more to make the car an ICV, which in the end made the car nowhere near what was originally intended.

it's not about getting it in writing wouldn't matter how much writing there is IF the registration authorities change there rules which i'de guess is the deal in this case as he was given 6 months to get it done, it won't matter what the engineer has put in writing
engineers only change what they tell you you can do when people above them move the goal posts :ewink:

Yeah Cal I get what ya saying. Alot of regs could change if there was no deadlines made and the build went on for ever and ever and ever and ever......
Anyway, lets let this bloke get back to his thread and build

EKV8WAGON wrote:My mate thats doing alot of the fabrication on the car spoke to the engineer & said it is all good for rego. The wheel arches are very mild, more high than wide, just to get the car as low as possible, still remains as leaf spring, not 4 link.Hope his right because I want a street car,not just a drag car.I don`t really want to get into rego/engineer stuff as I`m not dealing with the engineer,my mate is & I will leave it as that...Enjoy the build fellas :D :D :D
so hows the build progressing :?:

You got it in one Mick, he got sick of everyone's 2 cents worth on engineering.

Shame though it was looking like an awesome build. :(

I'd probably agree, except I've been through the rego mill a couple of times myself. It's far better to get all your information and facts correct, than to have a very nice car that you can't use on the road. Not having a go at this guy at all ( personally I love the look he's going for ) but a lot of people on forums, not just this one, get the shits because the whole world doesn't pat them on the back and tell them what a good job they are doing. All the criticism as far as I can see has been very constructive.

interesting point about the time frame
when i built the ute it was 5 years till i presented it for rego
i worked with my engineer very closley over this time
i didnt want to put that amount of time and the money i had spent into something i could drive every day
i called the head of the licencing a week prior to rego to request the number plates to be there
he tells me that there has been a change in laws
cant run the 15x 10s you will have to present it with different rear wheels
i very politley rang the ombudsman and we talked about the issue
bottom line was i had a leagle binding document from licencing stating detials of the build with no final date
car breezed through as is
dont have to get nasty to make your point but dont back down either
