is there a prefered brand of oven cleaner (what did you use)

I've used Mister Muscle, use it on plastic models too. Works a treat.

The first brand of oven cleaner I used was a no frills brand we had under the kitchen sink-worked a treat. Mr Muscle works just as good. Any brand as long as theu have sodium hydroxide as an active ingredient.

so, i check where those wire from the regulator went... or where they didn't is more like it...

the brown one in the top left corner & the black one in the bottom right hand corner were taped up with the blue one that plugs in to the back of the alternator ????



so the only wire that is in use is that red (which runs to down to the starter motor)...

what part does the regulator play in this instance....

Looking at the pic above, the (B)battery is the red on the left side, the middle (DF) is field which is blue, the (D+) right hand side is brown and the black goes onto any screw that secures the reg on the right hand side.

None of which is relevant "IF" you have an internally regulated alternator.

Matty, what exactly is fitted to your car? (Alternator or Generator) Internally Regulated or Externally Regulated?

he has a red motor so i'm guessing he has an alternator
if you have an alternator if not painted it should be aluminium look on the back of it and see if it has a small flattish about (30 mill x 30 mill) black box that is a built in reg, if it has this the box on the firewall and some of the wires are not needed
we'll go from there

this plug is off my indicator, this plug is looking a bity worse for where... so i thought i might replace it but they said that they dont make those anymore, if so what can use insted...

Matty, if you are going to put your wiring under the guard , get rid of them things and go and see your local autosparky and buy some deutz plugs.
They are waterproof and will save you some headaches later .

you have an alternator, doesn't seem to be a built in reg type but also doesn't seem to have enough wires to be external so i'm out

Matty can I suggest - without wanting to be rude - you try to get your hands on an FB or EK hand book, that will tell you all & in more detail, wether you want a rough one, (so a few dirty marks won't matter) or a good one, they do appear on e-bay from time to time, even someone on the forum may have an old one thats of no use any more.

Having said that please don't be discouraged from asking for advice on here in the future.

Matty for the indicator use a male/female spade connector.

If you want to change the front light connector strip , go down Jaycar and possibly buy the plastic connector strips that are double screwed. They use these in light fittings to connect the twin and earth to internal filament connections.

I would say the alt is internal regulator , the bottom wire being the gen warning link and the above your battery return for charge.
