Nup!

Squeak persists. I tidied up some loose fuel and brake lines that could have been contacting the accelerator pedal cable union but that wasn’t it.

It is definitely coming from front right of the driving position. It seems to persist when I open the drivers door. I don’t remember this gap being this tight however.Image
I can’t see it rubbing anywhere, but I need to adjust this anyway.

The body panels moving around is a badge of honour. It means you are using the ute as intended - many miles, some with a load in it.

Guard trailing edge to body bolts? The ones up inside the cabin, that mysteriously eat sockets down into the sill.

I had a similar speaking experience in my old EK, it was the bottom rear bolts near the sill. One had fallen out and the other was on its way.
Just something to check.

Nothing appeared to be loose underneath. I dripped some 130W oil on the driver side hinge pivots.

On the way home from a run to Crystal Brook on the weekend, the engine started pinging when I sunk the boot above 2000rpm. Fresh 98 plus upper cylinder cleaner and octane booster, and a bit of sustained revving under load, sitting on 4000 in second and revving out to 6000 didn’t make much improvement. It also pings when I button off over 4000. I think this latter may be partly due to shaft end float which will allow the ignition to advance as the cam gear slows the dissy.

So I graphed this dissy roughly as follows:
0700rpm 09 degrees
0900rpm 12 degrees already
2000rpm 27 degrees
3000rpm 36 degrees
4000rpm 45 degrees with ported vacuum
4000rpm 40 degrees no vacuum.

I swapped in the unit from the blue 3.3 out of the sedan. There is virtually zero end float in this one. Set to 9 degrees at 700rpm idle. Reading 28 degrees at 2000rpm. Approaching 3000 rpm, advance tops out at a total of 34 degrees. This dissy appears to have been tweaked by limiting all out mechanical timing. This must have been done prior to my purchasing the motor in 1985. Test run in the morning.

Hi Clay, not sure if it's helpful, but my 186 is mapped to max out at 34°BTDC. No pings, but no idea if performance is optimised. Initial setting is 14°.BTDC.

Thanks Brett. At the least it points to the likelihood that the distributor I took out has a fair bit more mechanical advance than is considered healthy for a tune I speculate is similar to mine.

Running beautifully with 11 degrees initial, 30 degrees at 2000, and 34 degrees all in by 3000. It increases to about 36 momentarily, when I back off, even with no float. Could also be vacuum related here, although normally associated with manifold, rather than ported vacuum.
