Hey Greg, after our chat about the high speed propeller shaft failure I was showing you in my brother's LS powered Impala, I thought I'd share with you our experience.

So the replacement he has had made up has indeed been done by Hardy Spicer, he went to them armed with exact requirements based on motor power/torque output, trans & diff gearing, car weight and prop shaft length. Their engineer spec'd out one to suit and they came back with a quote of only $488.
Thinking that was pretty amazing value, he quizzed them as to exact specs, below is his Q&A with Hardy Spicer:

- you mention getting a slip yoke, is that included in the price? – Yes – Chrome Molly special
- is that for a single, chrome moly 3.5" OD tube, as discussed? – Yes
- what is the wall thickness? – 0.83
- are the 1350 unis included? – Yes solid cross lube free – the best we have
- what RPM is it rated for? – 4800 RPM

Keeping in mind the Impala item is a monstrous 1550mm long, the speed rating is therefore conservative. With 4 speed overdrive & 2.73:1 diff, that's still good for double the speed limit Oh and a loop is being installed before it hits the dyno again too...
Anyway, I can't remember if you said you'd already had a prop shaft made up for your EK, figured you'd like to know, seems it can be done for a lot less than the $1000 figure we were discussing.

When I did my tail shaft for my race car I wanted it rated at 7000rpm, the Hardy Spicer guy goes what it will never spin that fast but it does and he agreed after some calcs. The engine to gearbox ratio is 1:1 so flat out in 4th gear with the engine revving at 7000rpm the tail shaft is as well. Many get confused with the diff ratios and tyre size but a race car is different to a street car where speed is obviously a large consideration (legal speed that is !!! )

I think its a great price and the tail shaft from Hardy Spicer wont let you down with the info you have presented.

I forgot to show you my custom made aluminium one I had built in the states for the EK, from memory it was over $600 a few years ago. I have not tried it as yet but I do believe some late model cars also use aluminium.

So I have not posted for a while because the winter just gives me the craps.

The car has also given me the shits especially the front end, It was all finished and I dropped in on the ground to have a look at ride heights etc.
What I noticed was a lack of castor which I didn't even think about until now. I have come to the realisation that the front chassis rail of the EK is level with the ground but a Torana is not, it actually rises from the back to the front in the engine bay area, giving the front end natural castor. ARGHHHHHHHHHH !

So I hunted down another cross member and started again, this time I have created the same castor as the Torana. I am now using UC upper control arms, ball joints set back and Harrop steering arms. Nothing like doing the job twice ! Also started the brake lines and will be doing the fuel as well then engine in hopefully !!

Warm weather is around the corner so back into it. More photos this arvo !!

Still waiting on some extended top ball joints to fix the torrie front geometry real good

So as usual ran out of time so no engine in !

Made up most of my fuel lines and couldn't find my grommet box so I had to stop. I will run the remainder through the floor then into the boot space.


Getting busy underneath and running out of room !!!! Cant believe the dust that collects even underneath.
