Sounds like it just needs sorting out.
My old 186 can sit for a month or 2 and starts no probs.

A guy I worked with years ago had a HT GTS with a 253 and dual 2'' exhausts, but it had a deep exhaust note without the usual 253 cackle. I commented on this and he said it had a 2'' balance pipe near the extension housing of the transmission. My old Galaxie lost its cackle when I fitted 2 small hot dog type mufflers right at the end ( I welded 2 bits of 2''stainless pipe about 18'' long to these with my mig, and these acted as tailpipes and also deepened the sound.) I suppose you could fit a Y block with a car manifold on one side and a truck one on the other, and the crossover blocked off. You would then have a 750 lb engine with blow by and oil leaks, but your car would sound better than any holden V8, or Chev or anything else ever made, for that matter, BUT, I'm not really being that helpfull now am I? Just try the balance pipe I think!

I started my merlin today. The guy that works for me has never heard one before. Judging by the grin on his face i reckon i could have docked him a days pay and he wouldnt have cared.
Too bad i couldnt keep the thing running. Im really struggling to understand how to tune this complicated monster.
I was hoping to race it in the bridge to bridge this weekend. Its not looking promising.

Hi Jay, I was wondering the same...what's happening? I reckon you would find that a 253 with good heads and extractors
Would suit your needs knowing how you use the car. Your old green machine is coming along, all pulled down awaiting new 9"With discs and ind front end from SA. I'll drop in to take you for a run in a few weeks. Tony

The easiest way to get rid of the crackle from a twin system is to install a balance pipe jay
I put one in just behind the gearbox and ended up with a nice deep note

You could do an X pipe similar to what is on mine, and my car sounds pretty good.
