Painted these on Sunday and left hanging in the shed. They still aren’t dry enough to handle seriously so I’m curing them on the wood heater. Any way I haven’t got the idler arm support yet.

Mum’s not home yet so we’ll see how this goes down I suppose.

I do that all the time clay it’s worth getting in trouble for..some of those spray cans just don’t dry properly ever

I had to install two thick spring washers under the castellated nut in order to slow the taper to seat and also for the split pin to engage. Torqued to 50 lb ft. 21/32” socket fit snugly and they are not 17 mm. Also had to cut the ends off the split pin for tidyness. The outers are 3/4” nylock.

Ready to bung back on apart from the idler arm support bush. Wound up with two flat washers and a spring washer either side, torqued 50-55lb/ft.

When Dad did his trade, he was taught to cut one leg of the split pin off, and bend the other. I tend to bend both legs. Every time I pull something apart with the one-leg split pins, it makes me smile thinking the old boy had worked on it earlier.

Last part of the puzzle cameBush looks to be steel rather than brass as per original. These are a relatively high wear item which you can test by moving the outer end of the idler arm up and down observing any play. Cheap to buy and easy to replace on the car. Common at least FE to HR. Apologies to many on here who know all this.

Thanks for the interest John. Another boring photo of the assembly. Not sure when I can get underneath and install as missus has big plans for the weekend.

I know Rob reckons that the original linkages aren’t bad but in a way it is almost easier going the HD HR route and it should result in stronger and more precise steering. That’s what I like about these old girls is the ease of interchanging upgraded parts from later models. Ever since I put a commodore 5spd behind the 202 in my HX panno back in 83...... oh blather blather boring old fart.

Significant moment this evening as I got home on time to throw in the steering linkage and drive the car for the first time. Only about four car lengths.

Now to set up alignment and toe as best I can. So far I have centred the steering box lock to lock and fitted the pitman arm parallel to centreline of the car as best I could observe. Plan is to set driver front wheel at zero toe with steering wheel centred, then set toe in on passenger side to counter road surface camber. See how this goes.

That must have been me smoking the tyres with the mighty 186 and crash box. The neighbors couldn’t hear the rubber squealing over the piston slap and gudgeon noise.
