saw you cruising around newcastle saturday around 1pm ... very nice looking car!! sounded like you had a sticky accelerator at idle or something though ?

dunno if you noticed me in king st, i was in the blue commodore ute with oxy/accetylene gas bottles in the back!

Oh yeah..!
Strangely enough, I totally do remember that, coming down past Maccas and Carlovers there..

What you heard, was probably me trying to keep the revs up to prevent it from stalling...

Have been having a couple of issues:

Engine starts perfectly when cold, runs like an absolute dream... Engine warms up, still runs fine.. Drive it for 15-20 minutes, no problems...
Turn it off. Try and start it again, nothing. It will turn over and over but just wont fire... You have to wait like half an hour for things to cool back down again before you can start it....

So I have been super paranoid about it stalling mid-traffic hence the revving...

yeah thats probably it then, i could also see the tacho at the maccas lights it was nearly on 2k :P

so when it decides to not go, does it have spark ? wondering if maybe an ignition module or coil doesn't like the heat ? (i assume its eletronic ignition dizzy)

It sounds like the fuel is vapourizing after you turn it off, this is not uncommon and considering that the exhaust headers is directly below the carbs I would say it is a 90% chance that this is the problem. You may need a heat sheild. Do you have an electric fuel pump at the tank?

Hi Gaz and Sammy

Paul's Dad here, Yes we have changed the ign module and coil and no change to symptoms. Yes there is spark when it wont start. Another symptom is that when the car sits at idle when the engine is really hot it starts to hesitate and stall, which also I think is fuel vaporisation.

A couple of things we have been told is to install a heat shield and another was to have install a small header tank for fuel higher than the carbs so that there is a head pressure of fuel sitting at the carbs.

Gaz, we still have the mech fuel pump, do you think (or know) if a electric fuel pump would help. I was actually thinking about a electric pump over the weekend. Trying everything we can to sort it, but trying not to spend money if we don't have to. Also, do you have a suggestion for what we could do for a heatshield, materials??? Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers Woody

Basically what happens is the heat from the exhaust is not flushed away from the carbs when the car is not moving ie: stopped at traffic lights or turned off......... this heats the fuel in the carbs and lines causing it to vaporize, when it vaporises the vapor expands and pushes the fuel back towards the tank, this is why it starts to stall when hot at idle, by bringing the RPM up it increases the fuel pressure from the mechanical pump and helps to keep fuel in the carbs, an electric pump at the tank would help acheive the same thing without having to increase the RPM. It may solve the problem on it's own but I would suggest that a heat sheild/deflector will still be required, you could make a neat one out on 2mm aluminium "propellor plate", this is highly polished and looks cool, it is basically like checker plate but only has 1 bar instead of 5 bars and is used on custom cars and boats a fair bit.

Hope it helps.
