The geek in me wanted to understand why molasses worked. . Its not an acid like phosphoric or citric, and I couldn't figure out why it did so well (you can eat the stuff for goodness sake, and horses love it). This is a great explanation:

Second attempt.

Chelation. That's taken me back to first-year chemistry lectures. A chelating agent is an organic molecule that grabs onto a metal ion, like picking up a golf ball with your fingertips. Once the chelating agent's grabbed onto the metal ion, it doesn't let go, and carries the metal ion away with it into solution.

As well as their affinity for rust, chelating agents are very good at dissolving calcium scale, and in curing heavy metal poisoning* (although, if you're not super-careful, the chelating agent gets rid of all the calcium in your bloodstream and you die from low calcium levels instead). And they find uses in radioactive decontamination, because they grab onto radioactive ions like grim death.

Maybe my youth group leaders were onto something after all. At the time, I was trying to work out how to tip the playback head of a cassette player upside-down, so I could listen for myself, instead of taking someone else's word for it . . .

If you want to have a play with molasses (but are not quite ready to commit to 20L of the stuff) Woolies sells it in 450g containers (in the cake/flour/sugar isle).

Thanks Brett! I couldn’t find the hole and ended up hooking it over the column support stud. Looked in my ek shell and couldn’t see one there either.

Finally getting around to painting the front rims. Epotec 408 2k epoxy etch. It's a bit cool so using heat gun.

Used it on the while car Drew. On it way to go if doing big jobs. Otherwise I just use cans of protec 458, though not supposed to use under acrylic. Not that I've had a problem with it. The other stuff I tried wiped off with prepsol.

Jet Black 2k urethane going on flash dry epotec now. Originally bought this to do my steering wheel. At this stage it doesn't look happy. Will see what a few more coats do. May be a bit cold also. Good thing they are only rims.

Do not repaint these wheels Clay. That effect is way too cool.

Sorry Rog. They ended up coming out pretty good after a few coats.

I nearly forgot to drill holes for the valves. Now I need to wait for the paint to cure. Not my strong point.
