Looking good mate but bad luck with the broken bolt, I must say though that it's probably better it broke now, those bolts would be high tensile and I wouldn't have thought that being a bit over should have snapped it even so just take your time mate and you'll get there.

Cheers Neil yeah others were fine so far and won't re tension them. I assume I can tap it out and replace, ensuring same weight.

Hi Clay,

The rod bolts have some stretch in them but when they reach a certain length they are at their maximum use and normally replaced.

That's why the engine builder said they were still ok, I am assuming he measured them ????????

They will tap out ok, use a copper mallet if you have one or some aluminium bar etc etc.

Gee Clay, it makes me think what are the others like? Is it hard to get and expensive to replace the lot?

Dumb question: does anyone know the spec (if there is one) for maximum grey motor rod bolt stretch?

I helped one of the FE/FC guys out a while ago by sending him a set of bolts. His engine builder reckon the old ones were out of spec. I tried finding a spec via factory and Repco manuals, but found nothing. Turns out his old bolts had stripped before reaching torque, which is why they were rejected. Made me wonder if there was a stretch spec though.

Cheers,
Harv

Thanks Greg and Patrick. Rods need to be machined to t a me the ARP bolts which are what is now all that is available. Yes I'm bit concerned about the others but they all torqued up fine so far. Pondering.

Keep up the great work Clay! You got to 200 pages (must be a world record) and a well on the way to the next milestone. All threads have added to the overall collective knowledge and understanding of our old holdens. Keep at it.

Cheers Rod!

Pulled a bolt from a 149 in the yard. I'm wondering if there may be any significant weight difference. I need a precise set of scales, or wait till Monday and ask the shop.

Pots 1 to 5 pin clearence came in 0.001 to 0.0007" so happy with that. Image

Hi Clay, hard to tell if they are identical, from the picture, because one is further forward, but I reckon that if all the measurements are the same then they probably weigh the same. Patrick

Just a random though Clay but pull the other bolt out of the rod of the cylinder you are installing. Then compare that to the 149 bolt using a venier. Measure length, diameter of shaft, length / thickness of head, length of thread, length of knurls etc... If they all are comparable, I recon the weights would be pretty close.
Cheers Rod
