Well chopped open the rail this morning to see how bad it was. The bonus was the outter is still in good niche the bad bit of it was the rear spring hanger brace inside the rail was totally shot.
So I will redo the spring hanger internal brace then re-make the inner section of the rail as most would know they aren't a box section but more of a off center box. Anyway so that's Monday's problem now
The first hack open to see what I have or haven't got
Love this tool better setup than a small air grinder just a 90 degree die grinder with a arbor for the disc makes for easier cuts in tight areas and on pillars and quarter panels
Well I didn't start the next bit I got side tracked on trying to fit 245 wide tires anyway if anyone is reading or has input on a idea a workmate came up with so here are some pictures now this is a 18 inch rim they are not the wheels going on it will have either 14 or 15 inch wheels buy the question I am asking is to drop or not to drop the wheel arch height. So one picture of original and the second of a thought to drop it to the bottom of the tape line. And yes that wheel is 245 wide. Hopefully someone is reading my build even though it's just rust atm
Looks like a lot of rooting around when you have plenty of more important tasks to look after and will make changing wheels even harder than it already is with big rubber on a lowered rear.
I would be shelving the idea until later on the build but maybe you need to make the decision now due to setting up the tubs.
Then again I am biased toward retaining the stock body shape. Customisers will no doubt say go for it.
Well you did ask.
Cheers

I beg to differ Errol. My old ute ran 245/50 14's on a 7" rim. As my guard lip had already been rolled by a previous owner all I had to do was get the offset right. This pic was pre lowering by lugging two 351 clevo's for a mate. No rubbing, no tubs or cutting. It can be done.
And a few more, the Cruppi's non tubbed wagon. The masters of this setup!

Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
Sorry but o didn't say you can't run 245s although body roll may cause rubbing on the inner.
What I said was lowering the guard OPENING on a lowered car will make changing wheels more difficult. There is always a workaround and deep dish narrowed axle alleviates this.
Not sure you read toeys original post.
Bottom line toey. I grew up in the '70s. If it feels good do it!

Ok so I done a stuff up the old girl ain't running 18's it will be running 15's on the rear on the front not sure if 14 or 15 but definitely trying to squash in the 245 which I am having to tub it but mostly just to square up the original tubs and get a few more millimetres clearance from them and it's still a tight squeeze at this stage as mentioned my rim offsets are going to have to be spot on here is a better pic of a 15 in a similar wheel as I plan to run thinking chromies chevoits or moded interceptors

Well I am still working on the old girl seem to feel like I am making progress then look back and think what did I actually do
Wheel arch has been lowered 40mm hopefully gives a tougher look without going to far and looking to uneven from the front wheel arch
Some tubbing prep
Tub templates hopefully I can get to the steel shop this week coming to get the templates over to metal cut outs
Once you start doing these sort of mods it becomes addictive, next thing roof chop !!!!!!!!
Yes indeed the wheels can be problematic but hey its not like your going to have to change them everyday.
Regards Greg
i have had the roof chop mentioned but as i am hoping this will be a daily driver i don't think i want that option for front windows and the wheel changes well that's no stress just whack her up on the two post hoist at work and they will hang low enough to get them out easy (i hope lol)
