I got a trimmer mate to recard the boards. It worked out under a hundred dollars but that might have been mates rates.

Well, the crap weather has been holding me up, but I started to make the engine mounts today anyway.

I started out with a couple of bits of 50 SHS that I scabbed out of the offcut bin.
Image

50mm is a little snug on the engine mount, so I split them with a 1mm disc and fused them back together with the TIG. (I shoulda worn my glasses)
Image
Image

Drilled a couple of holes.
Image

Cut a couple of crush tubes and tacked them in.

Image

Then welded on some endcaps.
Image

Gave them a sand up and Bobs yer Aunties brother.

I'll trim them down later when the engine is in the engine bay. (maybe tomorrow).

They are nothing fancy, but should do the job just fine.

I dropped the motor in today.

If anyone has useful tips, or notices something Im doing wrong, your input would be appreciated.

Squeezed the ute into the shed...the ol goon wont be moving till Im done...
Image

I made a doohickey to lift the engine without chains...works a treat for a throw together made out of crap.
Image
Image

Ready to go..
Image

And shes straight in.
Very happy. :)
Image

I needed to fit the radiator to check clearances, so some trimming was in order.
Image
Image

I think the radiator is out of a HQ, but its going in with a trim.
Image
Image

I dropped the radiator in, but thought Id better fit the rad support to check clearances and to spread the inner guards so that the holes would be sure to line up later.
Image

It was sitting a little low.
Image

So I just lifted it a little and clamped it in place for now.
Image

Not a lot of clearance, but I think it will be fine.
Image

Id like to go back a bit further, but Im already encountering a bit of a clearance problem with the linkage behind the head fouling the rocker cover and the head.
Im considering welding up the holes in the brackets and redrilling them to set the linkage back as far as possible.

(please add advice and opinions here).

And the engine mount position.
Im hoping to be able to trim the prefabbed ones up just fine to fit.

That's it for now.

Flying along , how much clearance is there between the radiator and the fan ????

I guess my real question is does anybody manage to use a stock accelerator linkage when they fit a red with a fan?

Im happy enough with the engine position, though I may have to trim the firewall seam a little.

Am I wasting my time trying to make the factory linkage work?

Advice and opinions welcomed.

All looks about right. Yes i ran stock fan and rear linkage with no dramas. Tried a flex fan once......and it flexed into the radiator

Does your linkage foul the rear of the rocker cover at all?
Im hitting it at the moment...would probably clear if I sneak the engine forward a little....or is there enough movement before it hits?

Id love a couple of pics if its not too much trouble.

Its running twin su's and cable now, but it did not hit the rocker with the linkage setup. I may have tickled the seam and reshaped the rod a little. It will be tight. The wifes out in the car ATM but will measure on her return. Its running a HR radiator ....not sure if the HQ could be a little thicker ?

Can only find this pic of the front clearance

Radiator is comparable.

I'll tickle the linkage and see how I go..cheers.

with the engine that far back there should be miles of room at the radiator, i've never had an engine back that far that the seam needs a trim and have allways had plenty of room for the fan
can't help with the linkage they're allways tossed over the left shoulder in favour of a cable set up easy to do and a far better feel at the pedal

Hi Wot,
I'm enjoying following the ute build and love the old gray donk. Would like to know a little bit more about how you removed those dings in the rear tray (wheel arches) and above the tail lights. Keep up the good work and pics. Thanks

Regards
Stephen
