i might pic things on a car i don't like such as wheels out of proportion or confusion as to why someone may have gone to alot of trouble somewhere but not in other areas, but i'de never really pic the build quality of a car unless i knew i could do better

As far as that monaro goes, if it was mine i wouldnt of entered it in the show, it was bad.. reaaal bad. Dunno how much you guys noticed but there was a shit load wrong with that car. So much so its already being pulled apart to be re-finished...

There was a 2 day workshop last week with John D'Agostino, Gene, and Charley all teaching/giving demos. It was sponsored/promoted by PPG, and was on Thursday/Friday last week. That's about all I know about it, but word is it was pretty good.

I bet the Americans would've beeb surprised to see cars being painted here in Oz that didn't need a layer of "bondo" covering the whole car





Where did you get that idea from
i have had the privalage to see some of Gene Winfields work in bare steel, lead and aluminiun in his shop. And there was no filler used before the paint was applied
dont think that cars featured in our magazine dont get skimmed over before painting. Get those magazines back out and have a real hard look at the pictures. That have not been photoshopped
The Chevy ute in bare metal at the show was a real nice piece of work, and showed the skills of some great tradesmen. And will be a shame to cover with paint.
We all can pick on others work, and when you display your car at shows you must expect it. Seems to be the Australian way.
I have built two cars that have been in the big hall there and done ok
But most people who cast their critical eye and opinion fail to understan one major thing about the cars they are looking at. And that is the amount of money that has been spent.
Seems everyone is an expert on the expendature required to build a top level car. And what you should get for those dollars.
I know how much was spent on the cars i build and it is no where near what has been speculated. I wish it was because i would be a lot better off.
Some cars have heaps spent on them but not in the correct places or get value for the dollars spent.

I looked hard at what was on display, and saw things i liked and others that disapointed me. And I wont make comment on a forum about them.
shows like this are to display peoples work for others to see.

I was reading a book the other day about the coachbuilders vignale. All their cars were skimmed with filler.
For those that don't know vignale was one of the top italian coachbuilders to ferrari, maserati etc in the fifties and sixties.
I seen've a few of these cars in the flesh and its surprising how rough they are in bare metal.

I might backpedal a bit shouldnt of said what i did, not on a forum.... To can a car like thats not right, the amount work in it is phenominal and yes i understand that it would of cost quite a bit more than a nice house to build, and it would probably of taken longer aswell, but i was just disappointed and a bit surprised not to see the last 5% there..

it may have been rushed also i'm sure i read somewhere it missed something else trying to be ready for motorex and i can't understand why they would have painted it flat when the bare metal work was so good i think if we see it again somewhere sporting shinney paint and any imperfections tidied up we'll have our answer

Matt finish paint seems to be popping up more and more at that level, when every car is layered in about 20 coats of candy, a matt finish is a way of being a little different. The '34 coupe with matt paint detailing is a good example of using matt finish as a highlight

yeah as highlights but not whole cars i'de had that arguements with them years ago when they were telling me they wouldn't judge a flat painted car i told 'em it was my choice why do i have to have shinney paint if i don't want to it's my car

we'll be right harko you can allways tell the wanker tag allongs from those that do it for a reason

Saw Molly's FB ute sitting in the paddock at Clarendon yesterday looking great - bloody nice work and thanks heaps for sharing it with us! Build pics would be good to see.

The bare metal ute is a stand out - while a bet a heap of others had metal work just as good but painted over, to see the result of who knows how many hours of work to beat it and then finish it (was that some sort of brush metal finish like from a scotch-brite wheel or pad?)

Good to see trendies have worked out that thongs are cool - but it might put the price up once word gets out. They'll never wear flannies though Dave - unless they are trying to infiltrate !!!
