Clay,

Probably wont matter if they are both internally balanced. Meaning the externally balanced engines are specifically balanced by the harmonic balancer and flywheel, and the internal balanced engines are done on the rotating parts inside and the balancer and flywheel are neutral.
I would go with the biggest balancer.

Cheers Greg,
I was initially thinking the different strokes would mean different harmonics. I still don’t fully understand the science behind harmonic balancer, but I get bigger is better when it comes to reducing torsional flex. Maybe I stick with this one.

Its a mild engine in a street car - a stock balancer will be fine ......
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Still no engine. Completing balancing and waiting on valves.

Box ready to bolt up. Was running fine. Bit of a whine in first and reverse I can put up with. Common issue. Cleaned up, new thrust bearing, dummy output and filled with 1 2/3 pint of 80w90, 25% stabilizer.ImageImage

Did you put a splash (150mL or so) in the rear compartment (via the gearbox breather)?

From my old notes:
The original crashbox front and rear ball bearings were of open design. This allowed oil to flow across the bearing surfaces, providing lubrication. The bearings provided in the aftermarket overhaul kits are of the sealed type. The bearing balls are pre-packed with grease, and have metal shields sealed in place over the bearing balls. This means that the oil flow through the bearings is negligible. For the rear of the gearbox, the new shielded bearing type means that little oil can pass from the gearbox “sump” into the extension housing. This means that the speedometer gears, and more importantly the tailshaft yoke bushing can be starved of lubricant. It is critical that when overhauling the gearbox (or after removing the extension housing) that some oil (about 170mL or 6oz) is poured directly into the extension housing through the breather cap. This oil will then provide lubrication for the speedometer gears and tailshaft yoke bushing.

Cheers,
Harv

Or, you just pop off the bearing seals?

Oh I meant of course I did. What do you take me for, a novice? Must say though, doubt this box has been overhauled recently. Evidenced by roughly 1.66666666666667 imperial pints soiling my garage floor when I pulled it out behind the 186.

Lol. It wouldn't be a real garage if it didn't smell of paint, gear oil and grinding disks.

when I did mine (in the ute) I found the easiest access to the rear was by taking out the speedo drive - any reason people use the breather?

Yes I thought about that after I got the breather off and spilled oil on my spare seat

Don't rush the engine build !!!

Panel shops, engine machine shops they are all the same, slow as a wet weekend, although the chromers win hands down and do a shit job as well !!!!
