Went fishing with Raff today. Big puddle under the rear brake hose to diff when we got home. I’m over these brakes. Nearly there.

I feel your pain Clay. The brand new clutch slave I bought for my Ute has drained the circuit of fluid in the last month or two just sitting up on stands in the shed 🤬

Keep at it mate! You’re doing good work.

One of my fancy sleeved wheel cylinders is pissing out fluid under pedal pressure. Tried new rubber cups to no avail. It is leaking out one side. I pulled it out but can’t see anything obviously wrong. ImageImageImageImageImage There is some fine scratching and patina including on the side that isn’t leaking. There is a weld line visible where the tube was closed. Piston fit is fine, better than 0.003”. Now I am wondering if I have the particular shoe adjusted correctly. I have been doing the bleeding with road wheels off for ease of access, so shoes can expand more than with the wheels on to start with. Thinking about assembling the thing and fitting up with a g-clamp, minus drum so I can see what happens.

Clay,

The horse has bolted, but there are two things that need to be fixed with the cylinder -
1. Where the holes have been drilled for the fluid inlet and the bleeder nipple, I can see raised burrs. These need to be polished out.
2. The scratches are no good at all. You'd need to chuck the cylinder in a lathe and polish the scratches out with fine wet'n'dry. Any defect that runs axially in the cylinder will cause leaks.

I had a similar thing happen when I had the wheel cylinders sleeved in my FX. One cylinder leaked badly - the honing marks would have looked good in an engine's cylinder bore, but spelt "leaks" in a brake cylinder. My father, the expert wood-turner, spent as much time as was needed on each cylinder polishing the marks out, until the surface was like a mirror. This seems to be a hazard when you get cylinders sleeved, unfortunately.

Thanks Rob,
That confirms my thoughts. Old mate at the brake shop can fix it tomorrow I hope.

So brake guy gave it a hone to 2000 grit I believeImageSaid it’s possible that the glue has failed between sleeve and cylinder. He was also surprised at the seam line and said the sleeves are usually seamless.

That didn’t work so back we go to get the thing re-sleeved as it still leaks. Honing made no perceptible difference. Still leaking out one end. I hope he does them a bit quicker this time. My patience is starting to wear thin.

Thanks joe
Not that I’m looking for sympathy. An old colleague once told me where to find that. In the dictionary between shit and syphillis.

Had a brand, spanking new cylinder from Rares do the same thing. Also had a brand, spanking new master cylinder check valve from Burt Brothers crap out. I wonder at the quality control for some of the new bits, even when the suppliers are brand-name.

Could be worse, the brother in law just spent several hours trying to bleed out the clutch slave on a VZ Conformadore. Modern sorcery required on that one :wtf:

Cheers,

Agree Harv, which is why I went for sleeving the originals in the first place.

Hi Clay, is it possible that a seal’s been damaged by the port burrs that Rob mentioned? I’m yet to pull one of these apart so don’t even know if that could happen.
Cheers,
John
