Ok, next question, are you using the correct size indicator bulbs for the flasher cans you’re using (normally 21 Watts each)? If not, this may be your problem. The lamps need to be the correct size for the can to work. You asked “What’s the go with these flasher cans ?” Well here goes.... here’s a sketch showing the older style can workings

Image

There’s a bi-metallic strip inside a heater coil with a specific resistance in the can, which is basically a relay. When 12v is applied at “B” (or sometimes “X”) a certain current flows through the strip and the lamps. This current isn’t large enough to make the lamps light up, but large enough to make the metal strip bend as it heats up. When it bends, contact is made (circled in green above) to give the lamps and dash light enough current to light up, as the metal strip is bypassed. When this happens, the metal strip is shorted out, so it cools down, straightens up and the contacts open again. Rinse and repeat until the indicators are switched off.
Some cans work the opposite in that the contacts are normally closed, then open when the strip heats up.
An electronic flasher can does this by measuring the current and using black magic transistors to turn power on and off to the lamps.
If you use lamps of a lesser wattage, or if one of the lamps blows, then the system either won’t work at all, or will work at a slower flash rate.
Sorry if I’ve gone on a bit too much, but hope it helps.

Cheers,
John

Thanks John. I've got some excellent information to go on now.

100km drive no issues other than losing a wiper arm at 60mph. Went back and picked it up. I was adjusting position last thing last night and hadn't driven it on the spindle enough.ImageImageImageImage

More fun than a hat full of arseholes today. Ric she is noisy with harmonic vibrations here and there. Motor is a bit fumy but revs fairly smoothly to valve bounce. The rear springs creak. Got to vibrating more closer to Dudley's. Diff universal cap bolts had two threads of play explained a lot. Having said done near 200miles today no drama. Needle back under half tank which I regard as near empty. Used a litre of oil and just putting in thicker and thicker. The left rear indicator is reported working thanks to Sunny Tim and the boys from brizvegas.

A pleasure to meet the guys Tony (Brian Westlake on here), Greg the Aircheif guru, Brian, Allan and Tim. These guys don't muck around they descended on the yard like across between a well oiled swat team and a plague of locusts. Also EK Dave Seddon and mate Bluey, more serious enthusiasts.

Much positive feedback about the car am I chuffed!

Now a full going over is on order. Brakes need bleeding as they are coming up good with a pump. They are well bedded in and will need adjusting. Tighten every nut and bolt. Taller diff and new uni joints. Rear engine mounts (clutch judder). Rear gearbox seal andx balance up the tail shaft.

Fumes are mainly on opening throttle under load. Exhaust has always had a slight flutter maybe burnt valve. I'll run compressions. Got a few different heads no better get it regoed first.ImageImage

Ute looks great Clay,
You should be very pleased with your efforts taking on a wide variety of tasks along the way. Have certainly learnt a lot about these old wheels ready your detailed posts, thank you. You did bloody well to find that wiper arm! Keep the updates coming.

Thanks Stephen. I got plenty of inspiration from you. Look forward to getting our ute S out together on a run.

Was really good to meet you and your mates Tim. We just squeezed it in by the looks due to pandemic restrictions.
