come to think of it , the one in my ute did the same thing after I put a Rares one in it when I rebuilt the ute in 2010 - got one out of one of the wrecks in EKmart to replace it with and its still in there ......
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Bit tight getting the zorst on in one piece without a hoist. Released the bottom shocker mount and expanded the spring with the bottle jack.Image

Had to laugh. Grace's ute had sat for many years before we got it on the road. Put my boot into it coming down a hill, and it leaned out and backfired. Great big cloud of red rust came out the exhaust :lol: It was a pretty good bang... managed to turn the oval-shaped muffler partially back into a circle-shape :shock: .

All that came out was a piece of paper and stout bottle top covered in soot. I’ll get a nice one made when I get the driveline settled in, maybe..... I did have thoughts of cleaning and painting it but just wanted it on the car in the end.

Decided to have a go and repair the cable swage. For a start the hole in the ball was blind, whereas originally the wire goes through. Obviously going to be stronger. I drilled out the ball to a friction fit 2.5mm or 0.100”. Got it started on the wire, put wire in the vice, just enough force to hold while I tapped the ball on, using a small holed washer as a drift to allow the wire to come through. Then squeezed in the vice on perpendicular spacing. Not satisfied. I turned down the mig to 3C and zapped the exposed wire ends. Should hold now but I have to remember it’s not my Tojo, which I yank hard as when leaving in neutral on sloping ground to open gates etc.

Back on the ground ready for another lap of the driveway. Tried some Saturday night specials for more traction.Image

168 178 166 159 163 169. Numbers four and five let the side down a bit

No 3 oily plug.

Gudgeon rattle.

Flat spot goes away when the inlet has warmed up. Might plump in manifold and heater in series. 179 head doesn’t facilitate running parallel.

Neighbour just finished tidying up the common driveway so gave it a bash. Still managed to do bit of gravel flinging it’s about 1:7 slope and original diff.

Gudgeon pin noise is more a grey motor thing, whereas red motors tend more towards piston slap in high-mileage examples.

Slightly uneven compressions and a flat spot to me indicate badly seating valves. Not burnt-valve-badly seating, but just somewhat leaky. How does the motor behave as it warms up? If it starts well, and idles well when properly warm, but acts a bit ornery when warming up, that's another indication that a valve grind may be in order. And of course, a second compression test with a teaspoon of oil down the plug holes will tell you whether the compression's being lost past the rings or the valves.

I'm amused by the paddock-racer appearance. I drove "Found Object" up and down the drive in a similar state too. You realise how much non-essentials like an interior, fixed glass, bumpers and hanging panels weigh a car down.
