So simple - thanks again Clay - not sure why he didn't know that - he had left it in place to paint the dash - just masked it which looked ok but I could tell it wasn't right and the black behind the bezel needed to be re-done.

Unfortunately it just wont budge so going to use the big hammer and replace the lot with a rares unit - they look pretty decent so hopefully works out- the key was really sloppy anyway so she was on the way out.

the ring undoes and then the escutcheon can come off and you can withdraw the ignition switch from behind the dash.
there is a tool for the ring, but they super rare now

yeah the ring was the easy part but the Barrel would not release from the mechanism it fits into - no matter what we did - a few tried with much more experience than I but just no go so OFF WITH IT"S HEAD! I'll feel better knowing it's painted right behind it.

You will get it out. Keep turning anti clockwise. Combination of gentle and forceful jiggling of the key. Shifter on the key for leverage and if the key shears use a chisel and shifter.

WALLY I had a similar problem with mine ,mine was out of the car but couldn,t get it to release hit with WD40 overnite then blow it out with compresed air after 50 odd years there is a lot of crap in the lock

most likely because its not getting to the correct postion. cut a new key to code and try with that.

just going to grind the corners off the Key slot and the lock ring will come off then I can just replace the barrel if everything else ok. I dont want him spending anymore time on it as time is money unfortunately.

unfortunately you dont need to do that to remove the ignition.

perhaps not but in this case it's all we can do - unless you want to drop in Monday morning at 7.30 before he starts to paint the rest of the car?

If I had of known they couldn't remove it 6 months ago I would have worked it out I'm sure but thats not how the chips fell today - so be it. In the end the only thing that should have to be replaced is the tumbler barrel which I was going to replace anyway so no big loss - why they didn't mention it before who knows.

Some more paint on - tub done and looking sharp - hang panels all done and body being blocked next for the last of the paint - then the fun of putting the jigsaw back together.

The fun part. Looking great.

That grey really looks great. Looks very similar to the Silverton Grey on Grace's ute. Which colour grey is it?
