Motor looks nice and tidy EKSCL.
In regards to the doors, I am going to leave the curved section at the bottom of the doors to "maintain the look of that era" and closing in the gap from there up. I am going to try 2mm plate, but basically it will be done the same way, not to many options with this mod (re: how to weld it). I will post pics when I get to that stage.
cheers

I think I got too much heat in the door skin.
It bulged out a bit, so I have a curve to the edge of the door.
I think the problem might be that I'm welding a 3mm strip to 3 layers of 1mm panel.
So I need to get more heat into the strip than the panel.
Any tips
It's going to be a challenge to get these door gaps even.
They weren't exeactly made to precision
Don't try to butt weld the strip to the door, leave a gap of about 1mm between the strip and the door edge so the weld filler will be welded on the inner edge of the door. The door won't buckle as much doing it this way.
A lot of beginner welders, actually drag the mig head away from the weld area, when in fact you should push into the area. You will find less weld build up and less gas use by this technique.

There will be minimal grinding clean up afterwards as well.

Thanks
V8EK4us, I'll be watching to see how you go
Thanks for the tip
oldnek I'll try that. You are right, I didn't leave a space
And I didn't know you got less build up from welding forwards.
Learn something new every day
Finally after almost three years

the old girl has a motor again.
You bloody beauty

Yep, black "grey" motor in white engine bay looks good, and like John said when mig welding you weld toward the opposite direction that you would when stick welding.

good to hear...sorry to say something like that, just you put so much effort into the other engine/bay work i would hate to see a few areas let down your great work and spoil it for you!
but keep going mate, your work makes me want to get out there again, but currently in one of those periods where a few other things need to come first!
Cheers

Yes Wayne - ditto above....
Please refresh my memory (it's a bit chogged at present) - were you contemplating keyless entry and quarterless windows?.... I can't remember...
when you come to the luggage compartment floor - you may like to consider changing the spare wheel well size - all that work in mine and I'm going to have to go back in there to cater for larger spare wheel.....
Like you door extensions - sad thing is that many will not even notice them - but we will........
keep her ticking over - no need to stamp on the loud pedal any harder - you should be somewhere near the end of the journey when the time arrives.....
frats,

Thanks Fellas....
No
Rosco I wasn't going for either of those things.
Sound great though, maybe next time
Progress today........ Stripped the roof down and primed.
It's great being able to strip the panels down and not have to contend with dents or rust
