Clay,
My niece's husband had the "starter not releasing" problem with his 318 CM Regal (one you probably might have assembled at Tonsley Park). The start switch relay stuck on as he was driving the car, the starter engaged and then self-destructed, and because the starter solenoid jammed "on" even after the starter motor blew up, the ignition was constantly on (because the ballast resistor was bridged out by the solenoid). He had to disconnect the battery to shut the motor down.
Set your starter motor up in a vice with the battery + lead connected to the battery, and a jumper lead from battery - to the body of the starter motor. Do the "screwdriver start trick" to bridge the BAT and SOL terminals on the solenoid. The starter should engage and run, and then release immediately when you take the screwdriver away. If the starter runs OK on the bench, then you might not have installed the starter motor completely square up against the bellhousing (admittedly unlikely).
Then disconnect the starter motor wire from the starter terminal of the solenoid (it's the short, fat, braided one). Now when you do the "screwdriver start", the solenoid shouldn't engage. But it should "hold in" if you grab hold of the pinion and slide it along the armature shaft.
It's fairly rare for starter solenoids to stick "on" like you've described. Maybe just check that the parts move freely.

I'm just catching up on your progress, very satisfying to see each task knocked off one by one.
I bought this brake hose set above, all good in the hood on my Ute so far and was the cheapest option I could find, better than my local parts guy even with my 25 year loyal customer discount
Cheers Joe

G'day Clay,
If you have any big issues at least you know who to go back to for your warranty claim, provided you have all the service records!
Enjoy seeing these old Utes come back to life.
Keep the updates coming.
Regards
Stephen

Gotta love the old Fergies. Theres a bloke here in Greystanes who has restored an old Fergie, and has it on historic plates. Drives it around, parks it at the shops. Must be a ball in Sydney traffic. Tried to convince the kids that we need a tractor, but they wouldn't be in it.
Cheers,
Harv
