The Rares rear window rubber is a decent fit, but the holes for the steel trim pieces don't line up. Fit screen, use trim piece as template and drill new holes. Put windscreen sealant in old holes and fit trim pieces over the top.

Thanks for the tip Harv. Got a tube of Wurth Dab Off per instruction from Gledge and others. Last time I did screens the factory sealant was still available. Anyway screens are still a way off yet.

Any advice on final grit prior to acrylic? Been going with 400 but for some reason 600 comes to mind.

Oh and what do people use to tack off between coats? I have lint free cotton cloths and I’ve heard slightly dampen with 3 parts metho to one water. No air as I’m in the dusty old shed. Greg?

My paint guy recommends final rub down of primer with 600 wet. You can get proper tack cloths from any auto paint supplier. These are" tacky" as the name suggests and removes all the spray dust. Cheers, Fraze

Hi Clay. For me pre - acrylic I use wet 600. Then wipe with cotton cloth with wax and grease remover( metho and water if you make your own) then I wipe it all down with a tac cloth. You can buy these from paint shops individually or in boxes of 12 or so.
First coat acrylic 800 wet( all my rubbing is wet), then 1200 for second and third, then 1500 for 4th coat and then one or two 'wet' high thinner ratio final coats. First coats about 150% thinner. Don't use All Purpose thinner with top coats in my experience. Tac cloth between all colour coats. 1.8 nozzle, with no more than 30psi (usually around 25psi) for my gravity gun with an 8 inch fan and 50 % overlap (25% top and bottom going horizontally) About 6- 8 inches away from surface.
Then leave a few ( the more the better) weeks to dry and then buff. Hopefully that's the end of the saga.

Pretty much what Brett and the others have said. Using 2 pack I have forgotten how much work there is in Acrylic between coats !

Thanks Fraze and Brett. Looks like I’m off to the shop for tack cloths. I’m on about my third tin of wax and grease remover, probably over killing it but can’t hurt. I do all my rubbing wet with the acrylic. Plan is three or four coats with no sanding between, just flash off and tack cloth wipe. Cure and wet rub then the screens can go in.

Rolled her outside, gave the shed a good clean,rubbed back with 600 and hit with karcher and chamois. There were some dry spots in the middle of the roof that needed some work.

Completely cleaned the shell ready for colour tomorrow.

Tray floor and wheel arches were looking a bit rough. They will get knocked around in use, so rather than pretty them up decided to act on a suggestion from a mate and hit them with a coat of stone guard, along with the bottom of the sills and rear quarters, prior to final colour. This also acts as a sound deadener come schutz so I emptied the litre tin on the back of the firewall up under the dash.

Optimistically it has warmed up enough, so the paint is flowing. Two coats down. A run and bit of gunk on one of the knee knockers is the worst of it so far.

It was nearly a disaster when I started giving the roof a final clean with what I thought was wax and grease remover, but why was the paint coming off on the rag? Oh shit that's thinners. Quick clean and rub with 600 and crisis averted, I hope.

Using 1.5 thinners to one Dulon acrylic. Time for a couple more coats. How many is too many???

Glad to hear the paint is happening. When I sprayed my bike bits with acrylic I laid on 6 coats, that’s when I ran out of time, paint and light.

You can no doubt tell the difference between primer and top coat, but mediated through a camera and laptop display the effect isn't so striking.
One paint to one-and-a-half thinners sounds right. To paraphrase Roy and HG, too many coats are not enough. Now that the weather's cooling down, I'll issue a warning about bloom. It's probably drier where you are than in Sydney, but bloom is a risk.

When my father resprayed panels at home, I was the radiator-carrier: a one-bar radiator directed onto the panel long enough to warm it up before and after top-coating.

Yes the colour doesn’t really glow in the photos. Suffice to say there isn’t much of it I didn’t get at least two coats on. Exterior and dash got four. Even the cab floor got some. Used up two litres so I’ve prolly got enough to do the rest of it, but another litre would be nice. I can’t wait to start masking up for the dash and engine bay. Got a litre of clinker grey with flatterer added been sitting a while, which will need a very good mix to get the flattener up off the bottom.
