Hi guys, just thought I'd mention my experience with the red as a mod thing. My new FB has a high-compression 173, and I'm a 22 year old P-plater. Didn't change my quote with Shannon's. Not sure about the cops thing but 100ish horsepower isnt exactly a performance mod

also this is another general question what do you reckon is the better type to buy??
Sedan, Ute, or Wagon, is there much differance in price or does it just come down to preference

when it came time for holden to make the FB/EK utes, i'm 99% convinced they just welded the rear doors of a wagon shut and cut off the back of the roof
utes seem to go for more money from what i've seen.
i reckon go with the sedan, can't beat their lines. i'll be selling mine soon but im in sydney, good luck with the hunt sam....or rob....? lol

Go EK Hydramatic - They are already set up to take a bigger box later or a trimatic etc now ..... and in the meantime shouldn't get a P plater into too much trouble speeding, lol!
FB"s = no auto = small trans tunnel.

Buy what YOU want and know will suit your purpose.
If you are buying for investment or speculation you buy what will make money in the long term, and that is a totally different story, but if your future car is for practicality then you must buy something you won't find shortcomings in.
Utes and vans are really only suited to two people which for a young driver can be a good thing as there aren't the back seat distractions from idiots egging you on from the rear. They are at the end of the day a goods carrying vehicle
Sedans are the smoothest looking old Aussie cars made be they FB or EK. At a pinch FE and FC models are pretty cool old cars as well. They are plentiful in varying condition and can look unreal in either pristine original condition and present well as a modified's equally as well.
Station sedans (wagons) are a blend of practicality and style, carry four people comfortably along with a fair amount of luggage and were often associated with big families - back in the pre safety conscious days Dad could haul good lady wife and FOUR kids - not one of them strapped in with seat belts !
For a young bloke with dare I say limited funds? the only car you definitely don't want is a badly rusted one no matter what style you decide on. Always go looking with a strong torch, a weak magnet (eg fridge magnet) to detect areas of filler, look hard, don't rush you decision or feel rushed by a seller and leave your emotions at home when you go to look.
Research all the problem areas - this forum is FULL of information and pics, just for starters.

one other thing, do you guys know any places that might have some resonable cars
i've been searching the internet pretty hard but haven't really found what i'm looking for.
just thought there might be a secret place where they keep all the EKs

just gotta be patient- the right one will pop up, just keep checking ebay, trading post, local papers, keep an eye out for signs in people's yards, keep an ear open for old fellas who know somebody who knows somebody who has one.
don't rush into buying the first one that pops up-unless its immaculate

Good luck with the search, there are some great cars out there..... and some #%^*& ones, ask and the guys on the forum will more than likely know the car and give an honest opinion so you don't get burnt.

Hey Sam,
Another thing is when searching evil pay - if it is just cars you want put in EK (note - not FB as they are not quite as modern as the up to date EK which had electric wipers, lol)
When ALL the EK stuff comes up go down the left selection and click on 'cars' and hey presto you will also find cars that the advertisers have neglected to mention that Holden were the manufacturers of, as EK's are iconic !!! Just putting in Holden EK (or FB) can miss things.
Get on this forum as much as you like to ask plenty of questions as the people on here are, in the main, a VERY friendly bunch. Without this forum I could well be uteless as opposed to being useless !!!
All the advice offered so far ( especially about selecting an EK over an FB) has been very good for someone like you starting out. Try like hell to find a really sound car and look after it. The condition of the body is critical unless you have either a huge wallet or endless talent at rust removal, section fabrication and panel beating.
