that's not really right 2 of the first that i can think of in and around sydney an A tourer and an A roadster and the owners went to quite considerable lengths to make the cars the way they were and find the parts they used, this is the fact with alot of them

i don't understand owning a car and not useing it my mates "rat cars" will never be registered (one maybe if he ever gets his finger out ) 2 are taking up valuable worshop space and the third they have to move outside then bring it in every day and if you want to take them anywhere you've got to trailer them
when i did the convertable the idea came at the summernats everybody was cutting the roof off anything that moved and welding the doors shut "summernats croozer" i went i'm gunna do one of them but mine will be registered next summernats there i was

Not every one can or wants to build a high dollar car, but what is the bracket of high dollar?

An owners home built car, using their best abilities is sometimes the most interesting cars to look at. There is no better way to learn how to do something than to have a go, sometimes several goes. And the satisfaction and pride when finished shows. It dosent have to have the best body paint trim and shinny bits, but it shows others what can be done.
Rat based cars show none of these, and what must people that are not into cars be thinking when they see them.

But the RR groups are here, and will be for who knows how long. I have seen a lot of trends come and go, and will not be disapointed when this one does. But i dont think this will be for quite a while.

That would have to be the WORST piece of circle work I have ever seen!!!

Im guessing the term Rat Rod originally came from some loser who called a hot rod ratty. Then obviously the term grew to rat rod and any hot rod with a splash of primer or a bit of rust on it was deemed as that.
The thing is, traditionally a hot rod would be built out of a backyard by a young bloke scoring parts out of a junkyard or whatever so nothing would instantly be shiny, they would do it up as they are driving it and eventually when they had saved enough money or gathered the skill, they would paint it and finish the car. For example the burbank choppers crew often are referred to as "rat rodders" when all their rides are built traditionally with traditional parts, just cos it doesnt have paint doesnt mean it's a "rat rod".

Unfortunately the term has grown and now ridiculous, un-drivable cartoon cars built with a theme are being built and people are claiming they are hot rods or rat rods or whatever. They are ridiculous, the people who build them are ridiculous and the people who refer to any hot rod with a non gloss paint as a rat rod are ridiculous.

Its unfinished, a work in progress....

true, but ratty look appeals to them and many of them have a helluva lot of work behind the patina, as well as some clever engineering (in saying that so do most other hot rods).
same can't be said for minitruckers

the vid is a little sad a blown V8 struggling on grass but i doubt there's been alot of fine tuning involved

J i think the "rat" term may have originated from rat harleys back in the 60's 70's it's funny when the "uninformed" call anything post '48 a "rat rod" rod is pre '48 we have a mate with a ratty EH ute no matter how many time we correct him it's still a rat rod

funny it used to be hot rodders were the enemy of the restorer now it's broken into another group where the "hot rodders" are now becoming the old pedantic restorers and if it's not shinney with billet wheels or 12 slotters or some other old cheap ugly wheel it's sh!t
glad i'm still in the group of couldn't give a f#%kers where i can enjoy pretty much anything rusted crap in a paddock, old original, full resto, classics, hot rod, "rat rod", street rod, custom, street machine, low rider, minitruck, chopper (jap or american) , classic bikes and in all forms flat paint, shinney paint' no paint, dents and rust think that just about covers it all

finally if you don't like it walk past it simple as that you don't have to go sooking to the world how you don't like them, the people who own them prolly couldn't give a sh!t what you think or maybe if you see them somewhere go up tap the guy on the shoulder and tell him to his face what sort of piece of shit you think his car is

I can't really say much coz I've never been that much into rods. That's not to say I don't like them or appreciate the effort people go to.

I don't really get the rat rod thing, but if someone likes them or builds one, hey, whatever floats their boat.

It's like when I went to Harry's at Liverpool last Saturday night. After a while you get sick of watching all the XY's and Brocky's rolling up with their 20 grand paint jobs, 22 inch wheels and blowers poking out of bonnets. Some ratty old rod (34 Chev I think) rolled up that looked like it had been built in a day and got a fair bit of attention. Personally I got a stiring in the loins when 3 restored 56/57 Chevs turned up, but thats just me. A bit of variety and induviduality is what it's all about. It's a passion, however different in it's interpretation, that we all share.

Everyone has different tastes, and although I may not be into certain types of cars, if that type of car is what the owner is into, good luck to them.

Though I still think that FX is butt ugly.

Which is what I was saying a few threads back Cal.After a while everything becomes mundane and you look for something different.

And that ratty old rod/rat car Cal ,passes the same annual registration safety inspection that the blinged up bigger dollar cars have to sit for.

A ratty looking car does not mean its a driving death trap.

I've done registration inspections on very nice looking cars with some very big surprises.One high dollar car I remember the owner bragging about an $80 000 build up, sure looked like it too until both wheels feel off when I put it on the hoist............ the ball joints were sitting there only because of the weight of the car was holding them in position.

This is only one an example.

How many cars on the road are driving bogmobiles with a smear of $5000 per litre paint holding them together 'eh?

J, there are plenty of, as you say, "ridiculous un-drivable cartoon cars " getting around and believe me, there are plenty of ridiculous undriveable cartoon mega build shiny/chromey non- rat big $$ cars both trailered and registered on the road and show circuit as well.

Open up a street machine magazine and tell me all those cars pass the engineering and safety standards.Bullshit they do, they might be registered but I tell you, most would have a book full of defects if the applicable engineering/safety rules were applied as written.

The FX ute is obviously built for its looks and nothing else.Throw some paint on it and does it loose its rat rod title?

I don't give a flying $*#@ what the car I drive looks like,nor do I give a shit about what others think about it.

Its registered and as safe as a 50 year old car can be.

I am in it to enjoy it myself not for the appraisal of others to look down upon.

I'd say 95% of the cars I saw there........and there were some big dollar machines .......... were prime defect material.

I don't know how half these things had number plates on them.
