Hi Done a bit of sanding the other day.Got most of the quarter panel done.


Ive spent the day trying to get two bolts that hold the subframe on off. Theve rusted and the nut is round so. AGHHHH will try again in the morning . If no success will get a oxy set on to it.

What are you taking the paint off with?

I used one or four of those (what I can only describe as) wholly plastic pads on a grinder, as well as a good sand blasting , Trev .

I started with one of them round flapper disc's that go on a drill then i brought the one's that go on the grinder. I dont know if your suppose to use them but they work. Cheers Mark

ive found that the flappers can do some damage so i use these other grinder ones and they look like a scourer but cause no damage but dteriorate quickly near edges so use grinder wire brushs around edges
the grinder has to be one of my best friends haha

Wire brush and 36 - 80 grit paper work quite well too. I think the flapper discs are probably a bit too harsh for taking paint off the panels Mark.

What Matchew said will work too with out any damage.

yes flap discs are not good, what the others have mentioned are the shot i know them as rip and strip discs/pads
be carefull you get correct ones though (speed rating) small ones are usually ok at high speed but the big ones are designed for use on a buff or variable grinder at low speed, a mate stuck one on a 9" grinder it flew to pieces he nearly lost an eye

also don't go nuts in one section at a time as they still create heat not great for bonnets etc

Hey that looks very familiar.. Our wagon MILDFB started as bad as that.. same colour too. We did heaps of rust repairs, she was nearly too far gone. But as for taking the paint off, I would leave it until you have finished your repair work, it's only going to rust again. Then use paint striper, it's much kinder on those thinning panels. How much does that cost Mark?

Hi All, Got the subframe off today..Them bolts i ended up just smashing a 12mm socket on to them and got them of that way.(wasted two 12mm sockets in the process)
Any way the body where the sub frame was has no rust at all and the subframe has a lot less than i was expecting it to have.....which made me very happy ....

My wagon including sub frame cost $700 and saved a shite load of time , Trev .
