side of the block between the dizzy and the fuel pump i think ? Should be a letter followed by numbers - like D123 which would be April 12, 1963

That might be one for the trainspotters - would imagine its April 6, 1955 but if its a J style block that would make no sense, and I wouldn't imagine grey motors were still being produced in 1965 ?????

I whipped the rocker cover off, and it has the later tall rocker hold down gear

I suppose the only real option to work it all out, is to take the sump off and look at the main cap bolts

Hello, trainspotter here . . .

Holden kept making grey motors for industrial applications for quite a while after the introduction of the red motor. I reckon this engine is a 1965 build. By the way, take a look at the distributor rotor. Some industrial grey motors had a centrifugal cutout rotor that shorted the high-tension to ground when the engine speed got too high.

Other things to look for: the distributor should be a BR54, with no grease cup, and maybe the carburettor will be stamped 23-3001 (or similar) at the front of the air horn, on top of the float chamber.

Rob

PS - Alan Little in WA (if I remember right) is the industrial grey motor guru.

In other news, I got the pink Ute running again yesterday, the fibre timing gear had broken in the centre and spun, putting it out of timing

Fud,

Yes, the industrial motor will have the EJ main bearing caps, and the conrods with the long nuts too. Because it's got all its original accessories, it won't have been molested, and you might find it's a fairly low-hours unit.

Pushrods: Grey motor pushrods came out in two (well, three actually) lengths. The custom pushrods look like they're close to the "long" FJ-FC length. Cam followers came in essentially two styles: FX-FC and FB-EJ. The later cam followers have a thicker base and to compensate, the pushrods were made shorter.

Search for a thread called "Grey Motor Pushrod Investigations".
