We adjusted the valve gaps.

Believe it or not it went to a mechanic running and came back not running.
Won't be recommending that guy.

Many years ago I had a grey that would run then stop for no reason, it turned out the fibre gear had a crack from the center to the outside edge and would spin on the camshaft. We would get it running but then it would just do the same as soon as we got some revs into it, needless to say the gear failed eventually so we found the issue. I was also thinking maybe your spark is there but the coil maybe not collapsing enough to give you electrical power you need. Unfortunately there's heaps of stuff that could be wrong, what did the last mechanic do to it ?

Regards Greg

Trev do a compression test on it. If something has gone amiss in the valve train/cam timing etc it will show up with a drop in compression. If the floats are collapsing that bad from backfires it has to be timing related either distributor/ignition/cam.
If you have the manual and a dial indicator you could do a cam timing check by checking valve lift at a specific crank degree position.
Also recheck the timing manually against the marks on the flywheel relative to points just starting to open on No1 mark onthe distributor housing to see if anything has moved.
Another long shot, drop the fan belt and see if the crank and balancer isn't loose (broken crank or stripped keyways).
How strong is the spark?

Thanks for all the suggestions Craig but being a butcher I understand what your saying but doing it is out of my capabilities ( or knowledge).
I'm leaving this for someone else to deal with now.
I'll help anyone out that needs it but if it's not a reasonably easy fix (carb, spark or timing) I'm out.

Interested in how this pans out Trev...let us know the outcome...

I'll see what I can find out Stewart, leaving up to the experts now.

Lack of computer got him confused!?!? Car can't tell him what's wrong......

One tip I've got is to change only one thing at a time till it runs again and the other is avoid that mechanic!

It's running.
Had a call just then.
New spark plugs removed and old plugs cleaned up and installed, re set the timing again and it runs.
One of his mates said if the plugs have been flooded too much they stop working.

Yep, learnt that the hard way with the roadster a few years back. They never come back after being drowned with fuel. Another thing is a worn rotor button and cap can have the car idleing fine and running ok down low but will miss when holding constant revs....

Never stop learning...
