Woody's wagon project
One tip with the paint stripper, lay it down on the paint, then cover it with glad wrap. This keeps the stripper gooeyer for much longer and enables it to eat a lot more paint before it goes hard and you need a jack-hammer to remove it (a bigger problem at this time of year). I did the whole body of my FB like this, including the firewall and sub-frame. Worked a treat.
Re: Woody's wagon project
Thanks guys, she's not to bad for rust, few spots here and there that I've found so far but nothing that isn't uncommon yet.
Thanks bluehaze, I used the glad wrap method on the roof. I also found keying the paint with a flat blade screw driver before hand helps the stripper bite into it abit more!

Re: Woody's wagon project
forgive my ignorance but with the rust you found on the roof did you prime over it to repair later or did you leave it bare in that area ?
With the primer you used does it have a maximum time before the top coat is applied ?

Re: Woody's wagon project
Hey mate,
The rust I found in the roof just received a real good wire wheeling, and then I primed over the top.
I plan to come back to that area at a later date, strip back enough to do the repair, then prime over the welded in section.
I think I read that the 2pak epoxy primer has some sort of rust inhibitors in it, so I figure it should be right to stay like that for a few months, (I think some guys have had it in epoxy for a year or two) but I'm sure it would depend on storage conditions, until the whole car is ready to be painted in highfill primer.
The epoxy comes in about 5 colours, my theory for the black epoxy is that when it's in highfill and I'm rubbing it back, I should easily be able to spot the bits where it's getting thin, so I don't expose any bare metal again.
Basically I'm doing it like this:
1) Bare metal (KBS paint stripper, strip it discs, various wire wheels)
2) 2pak epoxy
3) grind back, weld in repairs, re epoxy those areas (can also apply bog straight over the epoxy if needed)
4) 2 pak highfill primer
5) rub back
6) 2pak colour
Hope that answers your questions, if you want more info the PROTEC website will have information sheets on the primers/paints regarding prep methods, spraying etc etc

Re: Woody's wagon project
Put a solid day into the wagon...for both rear quaters, rear door rubber channels, b pillar, and around the tailgate area paint stripped and wire wheeled.
happy with the lower rears, only a couple of little holes, around the windows is solid, and the doglegs are clean, although one looks like it will need some attention to get the correct position.
Layed down some more epoxy, this time it came out dry, my gun was playing up abit, but I think it's mainly from the heat we have had. I don't think it should matter to much as it will have highfill over the top.

Thanks mate,
Will be sticking with the grey motor, the hot grey has been sidelined because I got the wagon.
But will chuck a trimatic behind this one to make it into a nice summer cruiser.
