Yeah, I couldn't tell if he was taking the piss or was for real
All it takes is the word and ill get cutting. Ive never done a chop. Would love to do it to something one day.
When i was a lot younger all i wanted to be was like the yankee customisers from the fifties.
As i got older i turned into a restorer.
I think its time to have a relapse.

Wait till Alzheimers Dave, you could wake up being a customiser and restorer every day might not get a lot done though as you'd have to keep putting right what the last guy did.........

Hi Dave, May I ask how do you cut and weld these two bolt-attached surfaces (subframe and firewall), without making the subframe a permanent fixture to the firewall?
Hey Pete, trust me, it will come up a treat. 2 years later n Im still getting people asking me who painted my ute... still in my eye looks as good as the day Dave did it.
have fun

Thanks pete. Steve im figuring re your question about doing a firewall repair with the subframe in place stems from somebody telling you the only way to fix it is to weld the subframe to the body.
I hadnt done one this way before so your query yesterday put some doubt in my mind also.
It was surprisingly straight forward.
The main problem with this area is its made up of three layers with im guesing almost no paint and the dirt builds up there.
The pics are out of sequence but bascally i cut away the outer subfram revealing the inner frame.
Once i got this away i could cut out the firewall and replace it with good metal.
I painted this with kill rust the reinstalled the heavier section reinforcing piece.
The lower section of the outer subframe was good so i welded that back in and then cut off the rusted out upper.
Then i made a new upper drilling some plug holes to weld the layers together instead of the original spot welds.
Once all welded i ground it painted it in kill rust and resealed the gaps with bitumen as original.
It came out great. Apart from the black patch you cant tell it had been done and you can still unbolt the subframe as per original.
Its funny you ask. When we were having lunch yesterday scotty got into my ear about sectioning an ek.
Ive got a couple of sedans that could go either way. Resto or custom. They both need heaps of work.
Ive also got a 54 chev two door hardtop that ive had since i was seventeen doing nothing.
The only problem with customising that is its all been done before. How many variations on moonglow can there be.
