Found out I've still got a year warranty on my stocker so can't touch it just yet

The balancer itself is a bit of historic circuit racing gear. It came off the ex-Norm Crowfoot 1955 Holden Special racing car. David Reid bought the car, took the balancer off the engine along with the head and cam, put another engine in it and sold the car. I believe the car is now in a collection in Tassie. David now owns the ex-J.W. French "Faux Pas" Repco Holden Special.
Eric secured the balancer by putting the bolt in the end of the crank. He told me this is needed in circuit racing to prevent the torsional vibration of the crank from shaking the balancer off. I'm not sure how he went about it but I can find out. One thing's for sure I cannot use a stock fan, the blades foul the balancer.

Thanks Russo :D . On a horsepower per dollar basis, a Chev is the sensible choice. But a hot grey does look and sound cool.

Well Stu I have a spare head that we can play with now (in good nick, no cracks), a stock cam we can get reground and Hamish does have that twin SU manifold sitting on the shelf gathering dust... :wink: :mrgreen:

Nice! I'm keen on all of the above.
Don't let Hamish get rid of that manifold without speaking to me first, that goes for the head and cam too :)

Eric built the 39Merc flathead in my 36,not much he can't do. I work with an older guy who's a toolmaker by trade, he's told me of hot greys in the sixties running Massey Fergie harmonic balancers.

Congrats on the motor, great to see hot greys coming back so strong (but then again they never really went away in my world :wink: )

Thanks Mick. Yeah, Eric's opinion of stock grey motor balancers is like the one he has of those NASCO/AC/NEW FRAM bypass oil filters - "rubbish".

Eric's speciality is flatheads. I popped into see him just before I got married and he showed me this motor he was doing for a client. Not yours was it?

Quad strombergs (with tiny venturis), Edelbrock heads, Isky cam and more than 40 hours of Eric's time porting it. The owner was spending some serious coin. Devilrod and Stewart have already seen this pic.

No mate not mine but I wish it was :D I could have put a small block chev in for what I've paid for a twin carb manifold, pair 97's carbs and finned edelbrock heads like the ones pictured. But as I said I love playing with old speed bits and pieces and dinosaur motors (love grey motors), just nice to drive a time capsule :wink:

love it i was thinking of running the frog mouths on mine but have to make up some spacers for them as they r for 94s and 97s what did u do for yours

I hear you Mick, they make no sense in dollar per horsepower terms, but dinosaur motors are just too cool. 8)

Gazrat, my frogmouths were made by Alan Fountain for the Stromberg 97s. Alan's son makes up the spacers so they'll fit the grey motor Stromberg. They might be a tight fit - Eric had to grind my spacers a little.

Yeah Mud, we're hoping to have the car painted before winter sets in, then we'll put the engine in. I can only manage one full day per week on it, due to work, social and family commitments. Hopefully I will get two days over Easter.
