Fun and games with the tailgate hinges. One of the captive nuts on each side of the body mounts appeared to be missing so I sawed access holes and built up metal with the mig.
Did the same from the outside then ground flat and fitted the tailgate. Drilled and tapped 5/16” UNF threads and all good.
Well one side done anyway.

I didn't notice the Frankenstein holes in earlier posts... glad you filled them though. On sedans, they are not neat but equally don't look too much out of place on the flat B pillars. On the ute's beautiful compound turret curves they would stand out like a pimple on a pumpkin.

Also now illegal I believe Harv, though grandfathered perhaps, I want the inspectors to be happy about dip shit stuff like this so they tick off on the 186. Engine number V68077P indicates the block was stamped by Victoria Police in 1968. Maybe that’s when it went in the car but would have been fairly fresh or even brand new then and the original grey only eight years old. Would love to talk to the original owner.

AFAIK, Frankenstein bolts are not illegal. Frowned upon in certain circles (and by certain engineers), though it depends on the inspector. If they are inspecting to ADR or NCOP then the bolts usually don't pass (as ADR and NCOP specify reinforcing plates to given dimensions). I have not seen specific legislation that disallows them (e.g. musical horns and aftermarket wheel spacers are specifically disallowed in NSW road transport legislation).

Well I’ve been getting in to the paint prep and thinking about how to smooth out some of the dents. I want to at least get the re-spray off and get back to the original dulon which is a known quantity. Where filler is required I need to get back to metal. There are quite a few small to medium size areas where the paint is very weathered and surface rust exists.

Taking all this in to account I decided to try stripping the rear quarters with paint stripper. So far I’ve got most of the re-spray off one side.and a fair bit of the dulon as well.

Once I get off the dark blue, straighten and fill minor dents I plan to sand and putty, then the Epotec 408 2k etch prime. I’m thinking I will paint the whole panel with the 2 pack, which will then need to be keyed prior to hi fill. Open to advice here anyone.

where you have bare metal, 1k etch then filler then 2k etch. if you still have paint you dont need to 1k etch, but you need to understand what you are trying to create bonds with

I am finding a lot of surface rust and loving the bare metal. 1k over bare metal, then 2k over all then Patrick?
Here is another little job I’ve been putting off.
Seems she had a shunt in the rear at some time and the lip between spare wheel door and tailgate needs straightening. The actual sill is pretty straight do I’m just going to see if I can fill up the fillet I’ve made with the mig. When I get some gas that is.
