Now I get it after looking at SUs on an Armours manifold. I was thinking on the perpendicular axis. You could have solved that when you were doing the engine mounts tee hee, 186 slant motor.

Front suspension crossmember bolted back on today ready for blank engine and gearbox to go back in to work out firewall mods needed for the tripple CD175s, and gearbox linkages. Battery box gone and replacement crossmember no1 tunnel brace ( 5mm x 50mm flat) installed.
Radiater support mods underway as well.

Well, a bit more test fitting. All is good. Having the mounts before and after the bracket skews the motor so unless someone can convince me otherwise, I will have them both behind the engine plates.

On the other hand, the tripples are producing a world of pain. I was expecting to remodel some firewall tin and was not bothered by that, but now see that I am also going to have to reshape the inner guard strut to get the back aircleaner to fit. Consultation with engineer required methinks.

10mm minimum gap from body to engine and hardware, so looks like cut cut !

I had triple SU's on the red engine back in the day with domed air filters, nearly fit but had to do the rear carb chop into the firewall and that was all.

Yes this modifiying mallarky has wiskas. I will do firewall first and then see whether air cleaner or strut mod is required.

Yes, that's because a FB would near disintegrate with all the rust falling out !!!!

Question without notice: do you need to have backing plates on front discs? I just woke up that my fancy XU1 brakes don't have backing plates. Don't know where my brain has been

Not essential but check with the engineer I suppose. None of the hybrid setups I’ve seen seem to have them.

Thanks Clay. I'll drop him a line. To be honest I don't know if they need to be HR or Torana if I have to get some. Just put the new discs and new bearings on too

If your steering knuckles are HR, your backing plates would have to be HR also. If the steering knuckles are Torana, you'd use Torana backing plates.
Reason: HR steering knuckles are threaded for the steering arm bolts, Torana steering knuckles are drilled through. Torana backing plates are held in place by the steering arm bolts, HR backing plates have a tab at the rear which goes over the steering knuckle.

But I doubt you'll need backing plates for registration. My much-bodgied HD had the "owner-delete-option" for backing plates exercised before I bought it. And 350s had the backing plates deleted at the factory.

Thanks Rob. They are torana plates then, 'cause the bolts go through the arms. Many thanks for sorting it for me .

Hi Brett Frank doesn't have backing plates and my engineer never mentioned them but this is WA you may get a different answer over there.

I have backing plates on my front end, I put them on because I have been questioned at rego inspections with previous cars.

My engineer looked at my front end and made comment on the lack of bump steer, measured all the clearances lock to lock but didn't mention the backing plates at all.

I would put them on, they do protect against the road crap and create air pressure to help cooling and your engineer wont pick you up on it !

Thanks for the info gents. I would 'put them on' if I had them. I have not been able to even find a mention of lc/j torrie plates for sale any where. Have found a set of HR but not sure if I could get them to fit.
Wil keep up the search.
