worst thing is the attitude of some scrappers recently had dealings with one asked why i play around with these old shit boxes he said he's crushed HEAPS of FB/EK's and i'de believe him as there used to be plenty around here, goes on to tell me he gets about $200 each for them i told him a reasonable one would be worth easy $1000-$1500 any day he laughed and said i'de rather crush 'em told him it must be nice to be able to throw away money like that and i'll tell you looking at him and his house and kids he could use the money
Agree with you Rat, I have dealt with them too, a lot (not all) are simply oxygen thieves. However I also know a few farmers that got the crushers in cause they were 'sick of people knocking on the door wanting to buy stuff'
one in particular early last year had a clearance sale, I knew he had a lot of old holdens so I went along, only a HR and 2 FC's were left. The FC's got $400 and $800 each. When I asked him what happened to the rest, he said Sims picked them up last month, they hadnt been back for these, so they were included in the sale. He was a bit shitty that the scrappy gave him only $300 in total for about 5 other cars (ek's, ej's and a FJ that i wanted) and wished he had put them in the sale. Sucks to be him really...
My great uncle lives on a farm adjacent to the hume highway. He had an old zephyr in his paddock (that actually still went and was quite tidy) was constantly getting motorists come in off the highway offering $$ for it. He got sick of it, pushed it with the bucket of his tractor and buried in a farm tip he was filling. Why not take even 50 bucks for it if someone could use it??? If it were a flock of his stinky old sheep, he'd try top dollar for them at market, why is this different????
On a side note there is a scrappy in canberra, that hoards a lot of good stuff and parts, he has ek van and several other old holdens, And the bloke from eziscrap that came to my house to pick up some rubbish saw and liked my EH, I asked him how many he takes to the crusher, he told me that most are usually bought off the back of the truck before they make it to the yard by people that see him on the road.
scrappers arn't all bad..
