Bad timing - gear + Twilight on Twilight

Post by Aussie Bob »

Bad timing gear. I guess there is never a good time. Is there ever any warning? Car was running great.

What do you do, replace Fiber with a Steel timing gear?

Are they too noisy?

Does the gear get quieter after running for a while?

Two in one month :( This time it's the Twilight Turquoise FB. 7ks out from Singleton yesterday afternoon.

.

Q. What do you do when you are stuck on the side of the road for three and a half hours? ....

A. Get the Camera out :)

Twilight on twilight ....

steel gear

Post by Lucy Blue »

I have put steel gears in every car I have owned after the experince of doing two timing gears in 6 months in my first car then trusting to luck on my second and having it let go on the way to Canberra in 1995 Ah memories.

yes they are a little whiney and I only change the cam gear not the crank gear. but I never have had a problem with them.

and yes you can change them without taking the camgear out of the car!
If I could think of something witty I would put it here

seems to be a popular subject at the moment Steve ...

I'm trying to make the same decision for myself right now - but with all the bad news about Fibre gears cropping up, I'm now leaning towards a Steel gear.

Any ideas best place to get them (Steel) in Sydney? ...

Cheers

They only seem to be noisy if you change the crankshaft gear with the one that comes with the set
I've have done 40,000 miles with just the top gear fitted, hasn't broken yet and is quiet.

On the FB, both gears were changed in the steel set by a mechanic. The engine sounds very noisy, almost like the noise is coming from the middle of the engine?

Bearing? or Timing gear? I haven't heard the engine myself as it is still down south.

Can anyone shed some light?

Hi Stewart, The Twilight is back on the road. It was the Seagull with the noise after the timing gear was replaced. Not sure what the noise is, so we are going to pull the engine out and take a quick look. While we have the engine apart, we will ad new rings and bearings. It's all part of the fun :D
