alternator bracket

i put some gilmers on my 186, and in doing so i had to make the alt bracket longer so i cut it and welded in a peice, but the weld keeps on cracking and makes the alt s**t itself...

just wondering if there is another way of extending the alt witout having to cut the bracket, or if there is a bracket that is longer that will work

any help is much appreaciated!!

Why did you have to make it longer? Could you just get a shorter belt?

i mean to make the alt come out more towards the radiator...
the bracket that goes on to the block
the pullys didnt line up otherwise...

i'm having the same problem with mine, the only way i can see that i can fix it is make a new bracket. unless there is another bracket longer than the standard six lower bracket.

i was thinking the same thing matches...i really dont wanna have to take em off cause they sound

but because of lack of tools and knoledge, i am unable to do so

when i can get a new bracket made up, if it works well i'll send one up your way. they are way too

not to use, especially after buying it.

Don't know too much about gilmers, But I've used a gas fitting to extend the altinator for my grey motor.
It's a brass fitting thats threaded about three inches long.
I bolted it to the block from one side of the thread and ran a long bolt through the altenator into the other end.
Hope you understand what i'm saying?
I have also used on another engine two red motor brackets bolted together.

here is a pic of how far forward the altinator has to be moved so it lines up while still being able to use the front bolt hole for mounting.

i used the large spacer that comes in a child restraint mounting kit to space the upper bracket forward, worked perfectly so i didn't have to bent the bracket.

you want to be carefull that all fits in the EK as there isn't alot of room between engine and radiator in the first place without moving things forward

thanks ratbox, hadn't thought too much about that. i'll have to run my thermo fan front mount to alieviate a bit more space.

you would have had to anyway that's how tight it is there isn't room for even a thermo on the insde

I was thinking the same thing, my standard fan setup is only about 5 to 10 mm from the radiator, I hope it fits

As much as you don't want to hear it, I don't think that will fit.

If it does, go out and buy a spare belt. One thing my mate learnt is replacements aren't easy to get. Always had to order one in.
