208 stroker and 5 speed

Post by fatfbwagon »

hi guys . just been offered a 208 stroker motor with a 5 speed i believe the gearbox is probly a t5 its definetly not a celica box but couldnt quite tell from underneath the car apparently it was originally out of a vk commodore. its currently in a torana. my question is this, will a 5 speed go into a fb tunnel without changing to a bigger tunnel . or should i bolt an m20 behind it instead (if i buy it). is there any way of telling if it is genuinly a 208 from the outside. it goes real hard he took me for a run and i was impressed. deos $1000 sound cheap for everything has tripple su"s 35/75 cam anti pump lifters yella terra head (9 port)ect ect was recoed about 10k ago still looks like a new reco, loads of chrome ect. also has reco radiator and near new full 2 1/4 inch pipe, tailshaft ect thanks wayne

208 is a 60 thou overbored 202 (not a stroker ) and there is no way of externally telling that from a stock bore engine unless you take the head off and measure with vernier calipers.

Strokers used 221 cube &*#@ cranks and brought a stock bore 202 out to 235 cubic inches. The 221 &*#@ cranks are now hard to find.

What ever you fit in an FB ( unless its the original 3 speed box) you will have to fit a bigger trans hump and that goes for the 4 speed as well. There just isn't enough room with standard trans hump to fit bigger boxes as is.

$1000 sounds like a good buy especially if it has the tripples and Yella Terra head.

I'd have that one in my trailer very quickly before the seller changes his mind.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

ok thanks heaps . i didnt realise you had to change the hump for a 4 speed so thanks for that too. yeah he said it was a stroker said it was an offset crank .so im a bit puzzled .i can remember about ten or 15 years ago everyone used to say they had 208strokers in there toranas ect but can remember hearing something similar to what your saying ,so was a little bit weary about it. dont know much about the 6s really im a v8 man but ive been in some real quick cars with 6s in them including this one.ill be seeing him tomorrow at work so i guess ill be running it in my wagon.cheers wayne

I would love something like this to come along for my FB, even if it was minus a gearbox

You CAN offset grind a crank - we used to do it in speedway motors - but it gives you bugger all increase in cubes or power , it was more a case of if one bloke does it , you all need to when chasing every last bit of horsepower.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Yep, blokes used to offset grind cranks to gain a poofteenth of an inch increased stroke and a poofteenth of a horsepower gain.I don't personally refer to them as stroker cranks ,just as an offset grind.Blokes seem to call them "strokers" to make it sound better and tougher :? .

Not done much anymore.

Power gain is marginal.

If the stroker fairies fitted an offset grind crank in your engine overnight ( and did nothing else) you wouldn't pick any power gain the next day in normal driving.

If you are chasing fractions of seconds on the strip then probably would be worth the time to do it.

IF it's a factory VK box (they're phillipino or something) it won't take alot of harsh treatment
as for the stroker thing isn't there the 202 crank in a 186 block, but you went for a run in it and if you were impressed that's all that matters
