first changes

Post by stillute-ed »

this photo was taken 20 years ago its my first fb ute .

Image

it started its working life at the p.m.g and was used by one of the area manegers so it did bugger all work . he bought it from the p.m.g and owned it till the day he passed away .the car was then sold to the bloke i bought it off . all he did with the ute was repaint it from p.m.g red back to its original honey beige and change over the rear wheel cylenders. this ute was like a brand new car no rattles no rust no changes had been made to it still had the cover plate over the radio hole gear changes were like new .the fella i bought it off lived about 40ks out of launceston now i know thats nothing to travel on the big island but down here most people would think 40ks is a trip to the other side of the island so combine that with its a country sale (farm ute) no one whent to look at it he had a couple of calls thats it

he was asking $2.200 i got it for $2000. truth be told i would have given him $3000. for it but lucky for me it had been in the paper for three weeks and he needed the sale this ute was like new .so a couple of years later paul keetings ( recession we had to have ) turned up and i found myself with a box full of tools and a 1960 fb ute and no job so i got a lend of a mates old glass a frame and started contract work .

Image

i built a light weight a frame that folded down under the tarp after the first couple of months as this one was to heavy

now i found work back where i did my apprenticeship and they had bought a company in hobart so for four days a week i was in hobart and one day in launceston thats 400ks be for you start running around hobart and outer areas doing jobs and me and the ute were busy so 600 to 800ks a week for about a year on the untouched original motor and you know whats comming (knock knock knock knock)the old girl gave up on me now that wouldn't have been a problem sept my mechanicle mates couldn't get a motor into it for three weeks and my boss said (you and a ute down here in 2 days or you loose the work )and this is where i made one of those stupid desisions that most of us have .in stead of renting a ute for three weeks i took the ute to a car yard and sold the old girl. motor was ready to seize and you could see the dollar signs rolling in the dealers eyes (we'll give you $2500. for it )they sold it for $5200.three weeks later AND IVE BEEN KICKING MY SELF FOR 18 ODD YEARS ABOUT THAT but no more arse kicking for me im fixing that mistake

the new ute has a lot of work to be done on it and its not as original as the first but that a good thing the first one was in excellent condition and i felt that it had to be left alone bugger that this ones able to be played with a bit (LOW'NSLOW CRUISIN) that sounds good

Hi, I see what you mean about the similarities. We can make some silly decisions under pressure.

It's a beautiful ute you have there, I'm really happy for you that you were able to find such a lovely car to take the place of the original. Also, I love what you did with the dials. I was looking at them on one of your other posts last week, very clever and a great colour too.

Do you have the old beast out on the road much?
