What kind of manifold are they on? If it's cast aluminam they might be difficult to shorten. Also, you'd be changing the "tune", ie valocity of the fuel and air mixture under various load conditions.
You could try (as others have suggested) moving the battery to the other side of the engine bay, or the boot. You could also try velocity stacks instead of the ramflo type of air cleaner often used on SU's.
Have your own fly wheel machined, or if you can't have the car off the road, get another, have it done and swap it over a weekend.

Hey Bertie, If its a lynx manifold that has FX-EJ stamped on it, The back SU will hit the fire wall where the regulator is. You'll need to move the regulator and cut a cigar box sized hole and fill with a Cigar Box? to give clearence. Or find british SU's that mount on the opposite side of engine compared to the grey, they have fuel bowl on other side so rear SU will have clearance without cutting. Battery will be your problem in a Wagoon. I will be doing the dissappearing battery trick in my Wagoon soon and thinking to put it behind rear seat in front of wheel arch!
