Pitted Chrome

G'day all, my rear bumper has some slight pitting (only noticable from a metre or so) which hadnt bothered me before but today i noticed the beginnings of rust in there. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to slow/halt the advancement?
Chances are its probably coming from underneath, but surely there is a way to nuetralise and seal it? I can't afford rechroming atm.

Hi Jake,

Thats a tricky one. Is the chrome flaking off? Or is it bubbling up underneath the chrome?

You could try some rust converter to slow it down. Theres a few brands about but the basic ingrediant is phosphoric acid. You might want to use it on an old bumper test piece to see what the converter does to the chrome. As you say even if you can convert the rust you then need to paint/seal it...if its bubbling up underneath the chrome I can't see how you could paint/seal it.

Best way to slow it down is to keep the water/moisture off the bumper and start saving some $ for rechroming...

i know yuos have mentioned some metal polishes but i just thought i would mention a polish which always ceases to amaze me, the brand is autosol and you can get it from most places(i get it from repco) these a just some before and after shots of my tail lights(the only reason its different sides is because i forgot to take a photo off it before i started but the one i polished was probably worse)

this was with only about a minute off polishing

If your happy with the polished finish then great. Otherwise the only way to fix it properly is to get it rechromed.
You can polish it on a buff and it will come up a lot better but at the end of thd day it will still look like shit.

the problem with rechroming these parts is they are die cast metal this material is very dificult to rechrome the process puts heat and acid into the metal which can sometimes more than often come out worse ask your chrome guy if he has had experience in redoing die cast first as you said you get what you pay for

Was only just discussing weather to get some things re-chromed or try and source new ones. Hmmm.

CHOPPED...what you said: "ask your chrome guy if he has experience in redoing die cast first."
Good tip there to us newbies that have no clue
