A question for you all
I have a Blue 202 that came with the FB project. It has a engine number starting with VL... and 3.3 stamped on the block so I am assuming it is a blue. Anyway the sump is facing the front see below.
I have searched the site and and found some information but I still have some questions.
I will need a red engine sump, do these fit a blue engine?
I am going to be running an HR front end with Commadore rack and pinion (shortened) so I don't need an EH sump?
Can I use the original engine mounts that should be on the back of the HR front end?
Not much into Commodores as I've never liked them but.......................
As far as I know the EH sump will bolt up to a blue motor as is but make sure you also have the EH oil pickup as well.
Are you using a front mount rack and pinion or a rear mount rack?
The HR mounts have to be moved to near the rear leading edge of the HR crossmember.
I think you will still need an EH sump whether front rack or rear rack.
Not sure what the rego laws are like in QLD but here in NSW technically speaking and going by the rules, you would have to run the blue motor with all pullution control components as were fitted to the vehicle that the blue motor originally came from to get it registered along with all the other required mods for rego.
So if that blue motor was from a VL Dunnydoor, then it would have to have all the pollution control components that the VL Commonwhore had to get it through rego.
Most blokes run 202 non pollution reds as you don't need to hook up pullution control with them and all the stuffing around that is needed to find and fit.
Thanks for that
I am planning on running the rack at the back.
I will enquire about Rego in QLD but I think this may just push me in the direction of a Red motor.
How easy are the EH sumps to find?
as far as red and blue motors go theres no difference between the sump mounting, simply find the sump that suits your needs and get the pickup to suit it....
if the crossmember has the mounts at the rear then it sounds like its already setup for an fb/ek .... the rack if its the same as my kit is designed to go in the place of the original drag link setup so if you get a sump that will work with that it should be pretty close to the right one.
if it were me i'd go for the blue motor over the red cause it will be newer and the heads in stock form flow better....
from the pic it definately looks like a blue motor.
Yeah unfortunately (or fortunately) the motor supposedly has a 161 head with big (308) valves. I do not have the blue head or the original manifolds. It came with extractors and a 350 holley on the inlet manifold. So I am bending my thinking towards using the head, extractors and holley on a red engine (186 perhaps). I am not in a rush so I might just spend some time building up a suitable engine from what I can find.
