Help with welding sill panel

Post by farkamhall »

hi guys. the continuing saga of getting the rust fixed on the fb is as follows. we found a mobile welder who came out and did some work on the firewall and replaced the inner sill on passenger side,. however, it now appears he is "too busy" to come back and finish what he started. I have spent the last six weeks waiting on his promise to turn up only to wait all day with no show. he is full of excuses, his latest was his ute was stolen. when i spoke to him last night , after another day waiting in for him, he as good as said that because his business has grown he does not need the small customers, I am in the predicament of having the front end off the car and only a small amount of welding to do to put it back together, What is required is new outer sill welded on and the corner piece fabricated and welded on, where the bottom bolt goes thru when you bolt the front end on. Does anyone here know of another mobile welder in or near my area, Tahmoor nsw (near Picton) or can anyone on this forum who can mig weld, come and finish the job off so i can put the car back together. will pay of course. pm me if you can help please. cheers, dave

Are you still going ahead with the body conversion?

If so, you are going about it in the wrong order.
The sills, inner and outer will become a major part of the cars torsional strength after the roof is removed.
And they must be part of the overall design to substantially stabilise the lower part of the body when the roof structure is no longer in place to help hold the front and rear together.

The inner sills must be made of a heavier than standard steel and additional internal boxing added before the outers are fitted.
The new inners should be tied into the front pillars as well to limit flex in this area.

What has your engineer advised you on the upgrades required for the body shell.

thanks smooth, yes the conversion is going ahead and sorry but i did not explain myself properly. the section i need to get welded is where the bottom bolt goes thru into the subframe, (at the end of the sill). we had to remove the front end to fix all the rust in the firewall etc, this has been done except for the bit i am talking about. we had to replace a small section of inner sill for the time being just to make sure the front goes on properly, the new inner sills that will be fitted are of a much heavier guage and will be tied in to all the relevant sections such as front pillars and of course, strengthening sections are being put in to prevent door swing sagging. We just need to get the front end back on so the car is mobile and can be moved around but do not want to put it back together without finishing the mentioned section. sorry if previous post did not explain this properly.dave
