handbrake- setting up on original drum brakes

Post by bennySA »

can anyone shed some light on how to set up the handbrake with the original FB drums? there is a cam lobe thingy inside the drum which spins around and tightens up the hand brake but when i use that, it makes it really difficult to adjust the play for the brake linings.

the hand brake is very weak, i think due to incorrect adjustment at the wheel. i have tried tightening the cable under the drivers door but it is already at the max position of adjustment.

is there any way how to know if the linings need replacing? maybe they are too thin.

any suggestions will be gratefully received...

Benny , best advice I could offer is to get yourself a workshop manual. It will explain this sort of stuff to you and give you a picture to look at to make sure you get it right.
The handbrake adjusters are behind a rubber plug (if they are still there) at the bottom of your rear brake drum backing plate. To adjust them you jack up the wheel, put a jack stand under the car and use a largeish flat bladed screwdriver to turn the adjusting bizzo until the brake starts to grab the drum , then back it off a poofteenth.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Hi Benny,
as Blacky states - manual - MUST.

I have to admit I am ignorant of what you have - are you original or is there a later model diff/rear axle setup in your car.

One thing you, and others may find worthwhile (and I haven't done it yet) is to paint an arrow on the backing plate in the direction of which way to take up the brakes - for the life of me, Benny - I have spent hours over the years trying to fathom thread directions.

Let me know which diff housing you have, and I hope to throw something up tonight...........

Hi again Benny,
just about off to bed I'm afraid - I will need to know what running gear you have - I suspect it is original in which case we will post up a bit of info on an original handbrake adjustment.

Straight and neat lookin FB wagon, Benny - thanks for your pic.
