louvers in the bonnet of my van work really well at getting the hot air out of the engine bay :)

Just make sure you line them both up.
From the bonnet to the visor in matching rows 8)

Can you have too many louvers?
I think not

Hi all,

the rust repairs are full steam ahead, and have just been notified that the car needs a new passengers door as the current one would cost more to fix than a new door. This means that 3/4 doors will need paint, both quaters will need paint, one guard will need paint and so will the sills. This is close to the whole car and now my mother is contemplating providing the clams for a total respray! If this does go ahead, or should I say if I am the luckiest son in the world, I would like to get that metallic yellow color on the mazda 3's and 6's, with a lexus white pearl flash. Opinions? The only downside to this is that the oldies will be more hesitant to fund a rb30 conversion.

Fark me, you lucky bugger. Who cares about the rb30, go for the paint especially if you ain't payin'. Should look really good in those colours! Motor can come later when ever you save up the needed clams.

Its good to see your parents are into this as much as you 8)

Mate, you sound about as spoiled as my son.

Better do some brown nosing to the oldies, you know, breaky in bed, mow the lawn ect ect ect. Especially for a metallic / pearl job.

Geez when ever i ask for my old man' expertise hes usually - you know where the welder is....nah hes a big help to myself i wouldn't be able to do it without the old man knowledge!

as for clams thats my department! so if there offerring to fund a full respray i would be saying yes! :D

keep your eyes out for an RB /box on the side and try redbuilding it yourself, grab a manual, parts her and there, from eBay etc.... trust me thats more fun that getting someone else to sort it! and you get a full re-spray out of it for free.....

whats not to like

Cheers

Hey Andrew, I just got a set of angel eyes (Not the cats eyes Ben. Thanks by the way) I noticed somewhere but can't find it now, that you have a set fitted to your car? How did you fit them? Did you upgrade your headlights to accomadate them? All this fandangled wiring has me beat and I know you young guys are wizards with all this kind of stuff. Can you post up how to? and pics if possible.

Gday theo,

My headlights are h4's and have the angel eyes built into them. They are only a single led mounted in the base of the lens, with a perforated ring going around the edge of the lens. This ring allows for the light to refract right the way round and gives off the angel eye effect. Did you buy a ccfl kit to suit a BMW or something? I have my parking lights disconnected and the angel eyes and blue led parkers wired up instead.

Everyone else, the rust repairs are nearly done :) However, the car is looking like it will get a respray from the windows down, as Blacky has recommended. It will stay the same colour, however I would like to get some pearl laid into the flash, or some sort of kandy if there is a candy white

Hey Andrew....Can I borrow your parents for a few weeks so I can talk 'em into buyin' me another EK sedan?
Here's some ideas for your FB..Why not do a pearl white laced side flash?...and seeing you have disconnected the front parking lights why not remove the lenses and replace 'em with chrome bullets? COOL

Laced side finish has me interested, but is there any other 60's custom paint ideas I could use? I was thinking using mesh to make a snakeskin pattern

With the PSU adapter plate finished,
Image
it's time for more of the snakeskin paint technique. It is a fairly EZ paint technique. Here is the "stepBystep"..First of the paint:
Image
black, pearl white and transparent apple green.
I am a big fan of Createx AutoAir paint (h20 base=EZ clean up) but the paint if self is a three step process:
First I shot three coats of deep black on the PSU plate and the PCI covers:
Image
Using a heatgun between coats greatly reduces the time needed for the paint to dry (minutes)..
Image
Next is the "skin"
Image
Plastic fish-net stuff. Honestly, I don't remember where I got this stuff from. I have had a roll of it in the paint shop for years.
Image
The only trick with the fish-net is to make sure it is stretched tightly over whatever you are painting. If not the pattern will not be "clean"..
Image
One light coat of pearl white:
Image
the pearl in the paint gives a nice effect.
Image
The final step(s) is light coats of your transparent color, apple green in my case. I shot perhaps 6 coats to get the color I wanted, again using the heatgun between coats.
Finished:

These parts still need clearcoat, which will give them a nice high gloss finish.
Image
You have to be careful with your newly painted parts, before clearcoat you could scrape the paint off with your finger-nail..
Image
Here's a zoom of the PCI covers. Remember only the rasied area of these slot covers will be seen when installed in the case..
Image
and the last few pictures, I will try to shoot the clearcoat tomorrow.

Until then..
