J's EK doin some foolay siek skidz bro (vid)
thats exactly what my mate said to the coppas
he said "this car is a cruiser, i drive it low and slow, dont worry about me"
anyway yesterday we had a little problem with the accelerator sticking, took it around the block this morning and it was pretty bad. Called some people and lubed up the levers around the carby with CRC but that didnt work well. So I walked down the st to my neighbour who suggested motor oil on the joints. So I did that and now its better then ever.
had a go at cleaning up the engine bay a bit too:
I did some touch up flat black on the radiator,
cleaned everything,
took the rocker cover off and gave that a good pressure wash which turned out pretty good.
And some small additions to the styling of the car too:
lomad gave this too me a while ago so I clipped it too the numberplate with bag locks,
and my mate gave me a new sticker
im off to rotto now, when i get back I want to tackle a noise that i think is coming from the fan belt area.

Well stated DR............
I am very greatly impressed with enthusiasts who know what they've got - I think it absolutely "cool" when a custom or mod parallels me and just cruises - to me it's a display in discipline of knowing what it's got, but refusing to appease the morons who call for it .......... mine gets driven this way - but unfortunately doesn't have the ft/lbs to support the look...................
I take great pride in restraining from responding to the morons who want to know if it can smoke up the "bags" for their "entertainment"............. never!
frats,
Rosco

my first car
I'm with you Rosco,
I can never be accused of such driving behaviour either. But I do like knowing that I have something under the bonnet that will help me get past that semi or line of traffic if needed.
Slow cruising is the only way to drive.

Looking good J, I have to say that selling the old girl was one of the hardest things Erin and I have done and when you put your hand up to take it off our hands it made it alot easier. Stoked to hear that it passed the roadside check as it would have made me feel like shite if you had got a canary on your first outing
There is some great advice above and keep us posted, as I said earlier, don't rush into anything straight away, spend your money wisely and enjoy driving the car. If you are going to get it dumped by a suspension mob, have them look at the kingpin at the same time, there should be some cost savings labour wise if you do it at the same time.
Keep us posted, we love seeing her get the attention and care she deserves.
Cheers,
Burnsy and Erin

hey guys just wondering if most of you have third party insurance?
as my dad bought my older brother and sister a car to learn in he said he would contribute to rego costs etc for mine considering I bought it.
We were speaking about insurance the other day and he only wants to do third party insurance, im not to happy about it but he said if you want full insurance then its coming out of my pocket (which is empty considering I have been out of work for a while (looking though)).
Is this very wise? Im not to happy about it considering some d&$%head on the road could kill my baby and I lose it without getting money back.
Fee's would be high considering I will be the nominated driver if we have "full coverage".
Help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
J

I used to do the same but as I got older costs came down. Give Shannons a call and see if its cheaper in your dads name and list you as a driver (this is important, creates a bit of driving history to help lower your costs and covers when you are driving). Vigil are another special interest insurer too. I would start with third party but if you can afford full comp go for it.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
Hi J,
we've had a few discussions on the forum about insurance - or more to the point - insurance companies.................
I have been with three insurers since 1972 and my current insurer (Shannon's) have given me the best deal - which gets better with each additional vehicle (now 3).
I appreciate you are an "L" driver, and am hesitant to believe you can get insurance...................
All my children have used me as the "insured" (my wife does not drive - cars, anyway - or trucks/planes/etc,etc but is pretty good with the microwave, washing machine, toaster and vacuum cleaner - all of which I am a dunce )- until their premiums became realistic - but heed this word of warning J - don't abuse their goodwill - they will pay very heavily if you are caught playing up - many don't realise that you have no insurance if you exceed the legal alcohol limit........... which I believe to be zilch for an "L" or "P" driver?
Even when insured, you will also have a number of "excesses" to pay - under 18, under 21, under 25, "P" license and probably a standard excess as well.
I don't believe some companies will insure you as a driver on "L's" but the person who is "instructing" - they are subject to equivalent "laws" regarding alcohol and illicit drugs (not that I am suggesting this to be the case in any form at all).
Third party (or "bomb" insurance) only can be almost worthless except to cover damage to the other vehicle or property - you may get third party, fire and theft - but make sure you also get an "agreed" value for you car.
My honest opinion, and your vehicle looks far too good to be considered a "bomb" is to get one of you parents to become the "insured" and be nominated (as DR correctly suggests) as a percentage driver. Full comprehensive is certainly the best, but of course most expensive.
Another little "trick" some insurance companies will "do" is to give you an over the phone "value" and be quite happy to take your premium year after year, until you make a claim - instantly, your vehicle becomes worth much, much less than they had accepted premiums for - get an agreed valuation and make absolutely sure it is on the policy........
You must appreciate this is a "new world" you are embarking into - younger folk (and those entering this domain uninformed) do not understand that there are far more serious underlying responsibilities than just keeping the old bus clean and filled with enough fuel.............. I know you will not be one of these people J, will you? In terms of paying out for many years in excesses and loss of ratings, I seriously suggest you refrain from juvenile behaviour - at least until you are our age ( I don't entertain this "sport" myself, J - but can appreciate many like to "drive" their beasts of creation to its limits - not me, I am engrossed with the dear old thing too deeply to threaten it).
If this vehicle is/becomes your passion, you will want to protect it and all your efforts/invested coupons by ensuring you will be compensated for any loss as best you can.................
just my thoughts,
frats,
Rosco

Thanks Rosco there is some very useful information there.
I have spoken to mum and she agrees with me and will have a word to dad about it later. After all, its my first car and I have saved for one since i was 9 years old. Its extremely precious to me and it would be worth the money for full time insurance.
My mum is very convincing and will make sure I am covered

Rosco I'm with Shannons, just for my EK and AAMI for everything else, both are sister company's as well as Just Cars so we have the best deal for all.
But in the long run it's not the best deal you can get, but in fact the deal with the least amount of trouble free bullshit to go with it, IE: claim processing, payouts + reinsuring. For 1 AAMI have always paid out for claims for us without hesitation, regardless of fault so they are the best insurer for us. Now I don't know if thats the case because we live in country town or there just kind to us. But I know of nobody who works for the company, or that we shares in it, so I'm not advertising for names of insureres. It's just the best value for money deals with trouble payouts when things that go wrong.
The biggest thing is with insurance is to tell them all the mods and accessories you have, From exact engine size to gearbox, tyres and wheel size. Cause they will try everything to not payout a claim in bad misfortune.
Regards John

There's nothing as Sweet as a EK V8
Yes John - absolutely
J - make sure you state what John has picked up on - I have all my running gear mods listed along with certain accessories I want cover for.
If you stray or omit disclosing modifications - you may very well find you don't have insurance -
John, I can only speak for what I have experienced with insurance companies - I have been with one very shonky company (the leading reputable Vic company), the other (my original) didn't want to know me when I told them I had fitted a larger motor...............
I haven't played with Virgil, but feel comfortable with the one I have chosen - unless they play up - everyone gets one chance with me - stuff me around or lie to me and its game over......... so far I have only had good service and advice from them................ I hold insurance companies (for all purposes) as a necessary evil - sorry if I offend any on this forum who are in the "trade"................I can't tell you what I feel about the almost empty city buildings these companies erect with clients premiums........
frats,

Keep in mind too that basic third party insurance (which you're required to have by law, included as part of your rego costs) doesn't cover damage to any vehicles where you're at cause. If you hit a $200,000 Ferrari in the ass, you'll be paying for it out of your own pocket. Basic 3rd party insurance will only cover personal injury.
Ideally, I'd be aiming for comprehensive, to cover all sorts of situations (including things like hail damage etc -make sure it's covered in the policy!!), but at the very least try to up the level of insurance to where you're insured for damage to other people's property/vehicles.
If you walk away from an accident with nobody hurt and your car a mess, it's gotta be better than adding the cost of replacing someone else's vehicle to the bill...especially if that vehicle just happens to be worth more than the national debt.
It really is a necessary evil in this day and age, especially when you're driving a car that does NOT respond in the same way to you, as modern cars will to their drivers (often very stupid drivers who don't understand the differences between new and old, who pull in front of you in 70kmh traffic with 2 metres to spare and then slam on heir brakes to stop hitting the car immediately in front of them...etc etc etc).
I'd check what the other guys have said and see if any insurers will take you on board as a nominated driver under your parents' names.
Let us know how you go. Insurance can be a very prickly road to go down and I'd be interested to hear what the different companies will or won't offer you (and at what kind of prices).
Ps: I'm with Shannons and have had no problems to date (but of course I've also made no claims so have nothing much to base my opinion of them on besides general customer service)
Cheers, Scott
