Hot grey 2.0
Hot grey 2.0
Hey guys, after many years, I’m back on the forum, and this time trying to build a hot motor for my ek street Ute, built one for it 3 years ago and sold it un started for a house deposit.
The parts rack so far looks like:
Srp forged pistons
Hsd I beam Conrods
ARP head studs
ARP flywheel bolts
6lb lightened flywheel
Cam is away getting the 35/75 Clive treatment
Ross harmonic balancer
Alloy timing gear
Jet engineering custom pushrods
Head is shaved, ported, polished, red motor valves with hard seats and 308 valve springs
Toyota sc14 supercharger and Holley 350 carb is feeding the juice in
Is there any parts I’ve overlooked? Or any supporting mods you would recommend?
Also, chasing some headers/extractors if anyone has any?
Cheers Fud

Re: Hot grey 2.0
Sounds interesting FUD, what sort of boost are you looking at ? Main bearing bridges at least or even a set of Galloways billet main caps might be cheap insurance ?

Re: Hot grey 2.0
Agree with Blacky on the crank bracing.
If you are going to be giving this a routine hiding, consider a forged billet crank from Galloway. Not cheap, and needs the red motor balancer and flywheel.
Beware the shaved head… it may not play well either the supercharger. What compression are you targeting? Can always run a decompression plate, but would be a shame on a custom build.
Consider a copper head gasket from gasket solutions, and if so figure that thickness into your compressions check.
Consider relieving the head.
An ignition upgrade will help. If you are looking period-correct, a Veryex magneto (with no advance plates).
Header setup will depend on where you want the torque.
Cheers,
Harv

Hey Fud I haven’t played with a grey before mate but I can appreciate the work you’ve put into that engine mate.
What power did you get out of it mate.

Re: Hot grey 2.0
Well the first of the parts have started arriving, the hardest part about building a performance grey these days appears that most things need to be custom made, but that’s just another hurdle on the pursuit of grey performance

Re: Hot grey 2.0
We have decided to go down the route of an sc14 blower, it is in our fabrication shop at the moment getting a snout and mounts fabricated, once we have perfected the mounts and snout, we are concidering taking orders for the supercharger kits, customer to supply their own sc14 and we will supply the about, mounts, shaft and pulley, running a 1:1 ratio producing 5psi and keeping heat low

Re: Hot grey 2.0
Also picked up another grey today, has lived its life on a seed mixer, not sure what model, hoping it’s a j block, interesting fact, it doesn’t have, and has never had an engine number on the side, so will have to whip the sump off it to work out what block.. after we try to run it, it also has a double row harmonic balancer, perfect for the supercharged engine build

Has the J block style dipstick so you might be on a winner- what's the casting date on the block ?
