I don’t want to jinx myself but I had one of those weekends where things just went to plan with no headaches….

The brakes are working well, a fresh set of plugs and eagle leads so decided to put the twins back on.

Prior to this I’d pulled them apart, bent the floats to roughly where I thought they should be, cleaned the needle and seat and made a new solid fuel line as I wasn’t happy with how it was seating. End result they went on, I’ve got no leaks, balanced up well and mucked around to get the linkages working.

This is the engine out of my fb. It’s a good runner, if anything a little tired but totally stock apart from the twins and the extractors. I was suprised at how much the carbs seemed to make a difference. The old grey seems heaps more responsive. Maybe it’s all in the mind? It’s still a grey after all…

On a side note I’ve been speaking to a couple of guys up here in qld.

The guys running vintage gas up here have done an awesome job promoting the class and have had so much interest they have been able to get a championship going with rounds in the Warwick dragway track championship and a few other specialist events like nitro on the downs etc.

All going well this is eventually where I’d like to end up with Eddie but I have other priorities to get through first. Some of which are close to being done which will be a nice relief.

Anyway, I had noticed that a number of people were keen to run but didn’t want to commit to putting a straight axle in their car or having to spend big dollars on a driveline to be competitive. A few of us floated the idea about running to an old set of /stock /modified stock rules as a support category. Seems to be gaining some traction so will see where it ends up. All just meant to be a bit of fun for those guys not wanting to commit to vintage gas.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

It would be fun racing in those classes :)

The photo of Moore’s Missile made me smile. John Brown took Number 1 Son for a lap around Merrylands backstreets in it one morning. Must have been in 2012, just before the Early Holden nationals in Bathurst. Little bugger still hasn’t stopped grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

How cool!

A bit of low buck fun is the aim.. we know how that goes though… Rules should limit people from getting too crazy.

That’s Shane’s? I thought he sold it I didn’t realise it was still for sale.

I had been watching that when he listed it about 12 months or so ago but thought it had sold.

A very cheap way to get into vintage gas

For anyone interested there is now a Facebook page for the class.

The vintage gas guys have thrown their support in and if we get the numbers will run the same event calendar as them. 1/8 mile racing at Warwick and 1/4 mile racing at nostalgia drag events at Willowbank.

My oldest son and I took Eddie out for a boys weekend of camping and dirt drags at Pete’s Moonshine Run. He (Eddie) performed flawlessly. I was actually a bit suprised at the noticeable difference the exhaust and twin carbs made. Maybe it was me thinking this. It’s been a while since I’ve driven a wagon with this engine in it.

Brakes were really good, impala floor shifter that had been converted to a H pattern wobbly stick worked well, didn’t get hot, didn’t push any coolant and we drove it onto the trailer at the end of the weekend. Can’t ask for more than that. Happy days.

Chase didn’t want to get out and if it was up to him we would have just spent the day cutting laps. I stopped every 4 runs or so to just keep an eye on things, run a spanner over things etc. given this is the first proper drive/thrashing old Eddie has had after sitting in Lindsay’s back year for 15 or so years.

Anyway we will clean him up and chuck him back in the shed.

Focus is now back on the LS FB which is now blown back apart for paint, powder coating and final assembly before heading off to the auto sparky. Still tracking ok for the nationals at this stage Image

8) Looks like a great weekend.

I read this:

“ Focus is now back on the LS FB which is now blown…”

and got excited.

Then I read:
“… back apart for paint, powder coating and final assembly before heading off to the auto sparky.”

I was still excited, just not as much  I need to concentrate more when reading.
