Encouraging chat with Roger Hancock. My column is on the bench and progressing, along with dozens of others. Yet to examine and fit worm and nut, but shift conversion done and column painted.

Ordered a worm shaft and nut from rare spares Melbourne via eBay, being sick of getting the runaround from Adelaide franchise. They are the only franchise store and don’t seem to be in the loop with the rest these days. I have a Toll tracking number, due next Tuesday! Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve got a tracking number without the goods actually being dispatched, but encouraging. Roger says don’t hold my breath. Watch now I’ll end up with two, doh.

Raff’s birthday so thought I’d leave him the cruiser take to school. About 6C at 5:45am and ute hadn’t been started since Sunday. Battery drained trying to start it. Reverse coasted down 1:8 60m driveway in pitch dark and rain. Roll started down the street. Pissing and farting, backfiring and spluttering cold engine not happy. Windows fogged and raining, busy traffic on the expressway, arrived at work at first light. At least I remembered to turn on the heater tap in the head before I set out.

In dry conditions it isn’t hard to get the inside rear tyre groeling pleasingly on a right turn. With the moisture on the way home it was a good opportunity to even things up on a left or two.

I have found using a bit more choke and no cold start problems. Still missing slightly at just under 2000 estimated rpm, up hill moreso, noticeable at light throttle. New needless and seats and reset float bowls is next on the list. Seems to be flooding driving up hill.

Some action on the steering column but no delivery. Roger told me to remove the top extension housing rib to clear the no1 body member in the ute. Some subtle massaging of stock floor pan and inspection cover will be required unfortunately.Image

Slight miss at cruise/light load may be main metering jets a shade undersized. Step them up 2 thou bigger and see if the miss goes away.

I have a steep driveway with a tight turn at the top. It regularly stalls at the top when I button off. Took the filters off and opened the throttles and there was a thick vapour cloud wafting out of both barrels. When I blew it clear the bottom of the manifold was still quite wet, leading me to the conclusion it is flooding slightly.

If new needles and seats and float height don’t fix it I will try your suggestion thanks Harv.

CPP only had one needle and seat. Storeman was ashamed. He didn't know they were universal from FX to VB or early &*#@ and Val with single or double downdraught strommie.

Clay,

Stalling after high-load/low-rpm conditions is an X2 problem, and more so if the inlet manifold's cold. If lowering the float level doesn't cure it, try fitting a pair of "grey" power bypass jets (#65 drill). You want to lean the open-throttle, low-speed mixture somewhat.

I see Summit Racing list #65 drill power bypass valves for the Stromberg 97. Anyone know if these fit, or where to get ones that do? TIA cobbers.

Went back to pick up needle and seats but they had neglected to order them. Doh doh. Was going to do this on the weekend, but I doubt I will fit it in before the big weekend now. Oh well.

Yep, EE Strombergs (97's) and BX Strombergs share the same power bypass valves.

Genuine Stromberg make reproductions in a wiiiiiide variety of drill sizes (don't forget that drill is opposite to normal hole size... smaller drill number = larger hole size).

Summit can do them, or sellers on eBay.

I can loan you a pair from the tuning kit if you wanted to have a play before buying your own.

Ute ran like a bucket coming up through town until we hit the 110kmh sign and then it purred. If it's not my imagination we used a shitload of fuel. Anyway here we are at Nuriooptar. The streets are awash with the burble of holden sixes.Image
