Re: Harv's (Grace's) EK ute
The John Deere dealer at Cummins, SA, showed me how to get the clearance on a grey camshaft thrust washer right -
1. Press the gear onto the camshaft.
2. With an assistant holding the timing gear, deliver a calibrated blow to the camshaft hub with a hammer and soft metal drift.
It worked like magic.

I watched a tradesman at Carb Service Co in Burwood use a similar technique to belt a drive plug into a Strommie. Drove it home perfectly, no damage. No way I would have smacked a carb that hard.

Timing cover, balancer, fan.
Strip bolt out in fan. I didn’t even lean on it. Retap water pump flange, find new bolt, grimace and assemble.
New (smaller) o-ring on dizzy, dizzy in. Much easier. Set rockers cold. Rocker cover. Radiator. Add cooooilant.
Bump coolant bottle off 2 stacked milk crates. 20 year old plastic bottle shatters, spraying coooolant over me and what looks like half the shed. Swear. Clean up green mess.
Turn engine by hand looking for mistakes. Leak from fuel pump shotglass… cork did not like being dry. Realise Rares don’t make the cork rings anymore. Do the arts-and-crafts thing and cut one from cork sheet.
Notice temp sender wire has end snapped off. Reterminate.
Go-no go for launch. Crank, crank, crank…. no noise.
Check for fuel (yessir!), check for spark (aye captain!). Must be timing, Dizzy out, advance on tooth.
Forget to turn ignition off, dizzy half out and cap clips arc out. Dance the hokey-pokey whilst juggling the sparking dizzy. Turn ignition off, curse own stupidity, put dizzy back in.
Notice that the temp sender wire did not like the hokey-pokey, and snapped again. Reterminate for the second time.
Time for second launch. Sounds better, almost catching. Run battery near dead, charge overnight.
Realise dizzy had been set for a slipped timing gear. Slack timing clamp, rotate dizzy body with ohmmeter checking for when points open. Ahhhhh… dizzy now much further clockwise, vac advance no longer pointing at side plate. Much better-er.
Third times the charm. Safety’s off, live fire on the range. Crank, crank, fire a few times, stop, Flames out the carb (new cam has overlap), eyebrows singed. Grin and go again. Fires, runs for ten seconds, stops. Lumpy. Grin.
Notice weep from where I disturbed thermostat cover. Rejoint, clean up spilt coooolant. Run out of time… it’s cold, and there are wolves out there.
More playing through the week.
Cheers,
Harv

Nice update Harv, that gave me a giggle. Its all the little failures and complications that make the end result that much sweeter.

You should see me install seatbelts. Two of the four kids refuse to EVER help me put seatbelts in again.

Re: Harv's (Grace's) EK ute
You might want to put out a book recounting the many exciting phases of you car history Harv . I would put my hand up for a copy. Sometimes I wonder how you have survived, what with magic smoke and sparky things going off in all directions. A photo of the highly populated naughty corner sounds like it would be entertaining too.
Thanks for the posts, they are fantastic.

Fitted the Nasco bonnet holder, checked oil and water again. No stray tools under bonnet.
Two pumps on the go pedal, choke out half-inch, one third throttle and lit the wick. Fired up beautifully, but was not going to idle at the factory rpm
Ran the cam in for twenty minutes. No leaks, nothing caught fire. Little rattly in the rockers.
Cooled it down, reset valve lash. A few were loose on the feeler. Reset the idle. Tidied up the few odds and ends.
Runs nice, no more excessively tappity tappits. Sounds good up through the rev range.
Needs a road test, but there is a red wagon with a blown diff blocking it in. Oh Steve, could you move the Camira? I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore. I’ll have to get the keys to the Cortina if I’m gonna move that Camira. Yeah. Watch the boat, mate.
Cheers,
Harv

Good going Harv. Grace will be chuffed. You seem to have a car or two in the drive.
